After a player on the Physically Unable to Perform list returns to practice following Week Six, the player's team has three weeks either to add him to the active roster or to place him on season-ending injured reserve.

There's also a third option. The team can cut him.

Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee reports that the Packers will be releasing Harris today.

"Yes, that is what they are going to do," Harris told Wilde via text message. "I lost my job to injury, but I have only good things to say about Green Bay and everyone I worked with."

Though Harris believes he lost his job due to last year's torn ACL, he technically can't be cut if he's still injured now. The fact that he left the PUP list three weeks ago means that he passed a physical. Unless he has suffered a new injury within the past three weeks, he'll have no recourse. If he has sustained a new injury, he'll be able to file an injury grievance against the Packers.

Assuming Harris is still healthy, the reality is that the Packers don't need him. With Charles Woodson still chugging along and Tramon Williams arguably eclipsing Woodson and rookie Sam Shields coming along nicely (he had an impressive interception in Sunday night's 45-7 win over the Cowboys), Harris may not have gotten on the field much if he hadn't been cut.

Since the move comes after the trading deadline, Harris and the balance of his $2.5 million salary will be exposed to waivers. If he clears, he'll become an unrestricted free agent.

There is absolutely NO harm that can be done by putting in a waiver claim. He certainly is no worse that the human sieves we have back there now. A vet that's good enough to suit up every week certainly can't hurt anything.

The Texans signed Williams as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and released him in the final preseason cutdown that year. The Packers signed him to their practice squad that November and he's quietly developed into one of the better CBs in the NFL. Wish they could get a do-over on that one right about now.

Well alot of the things that happen in Green Bay and with the Jets starts with the pressure up front. I wish we could apply that kind of pressure. Mathews has turned into a beast..... Anyways, yea it wouldnt hurt to put a claim. Matter of fact I am hoping that they do........ Please Kubs! Bring Al Harris and his veteran knowledge.

Even if he's a step slow, Harris might be able to mentor these young corners a little which could make them better players going forward.

It could be addition by subtracting one of our secondary. It's not like they are on the field anyway.

Obviously I would be a HUGE fan of this signing, not just "another body" type of guy. If he has recovered from his knee injury, this would be big for us now, and even bigger for the kiddies we have back there now.

I guess give him a look. But , he's 36 years old, coming off major surgery.

He likely will get a low price deal somewhere, and maybe here if someone on our roster is injured and if Al Harris is healthy. or just sign him as a assistant coach if you want someone to talk with our young guys.

Dolphins sign Al Harris

Al Harris has found a new home.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Miami Dolphins have signed Harris to a one-year deal. Harris's agent has confirmed the signing.

Harris, who had been on the Packers' physically unable to perform list, was waived by Green Bay on Monday, cleared waivers on Tuesday and was free to sign with any team today.

At age 35 and coming off a serious knee injury, it's hard to say how much Harris has left. But the Dolphins apparently figure they've added a player who can still contribute to their secondary.

Harris played for the Eagles from 1998 to 2002 and for the Packers from 2003 to 2009.
