Apparently, I must have Cam Thomas way higher than the "consensus" mock draft. This is what I got...even after drafting Sean Weatherspoon.

1. LB Sean Weatherspoon 6'1" 245 Missouri
2. CB Kyle Wilson 5'10" 185 Boise St
3. OG Jon Asamoah 6'4" 308 Illinois
4. DT Cam Thomas 6'4" 331 North Carolina
5. RB Charles Scott 5'11" 234 LSU
6. CB Myron Lewis 6'2" 205 Vanderbilt
7. S Larry Asante 6'0" 210 Nebraska
8. DT Corey Peters 6'3" 295 Kentucky

I'm not against Weatherspoon in the first, I suppose you are planning on using him at the Will. I just don't see that Diles is doing that bad to use a first to replace him. Right now I would rather see either DT Dan Williams or RB Mathews with our first.

I have come to the conclusion that this draft isn't one of my favorites in terms of matching needs with players. I can't say that I have any great Offensive Linemen that I feel comfortable can come in and play at a high level to establish our running game. Trying to find a "mauler" that can also pass protect and be agile enough to fit into a ZBS is harder than it looks. The guys who are potential LT prospects are the OL that I'm considering. However, Shawn Andrews of the Eagles is the last guy I can think of who was a LT in college that was drafted to play RG. I'd like Bryan Bulaga but I'm not sure he's available when we pick nor am I sure that I want to spend a 1st round pick to go that direction. His college teammate, Kyle Calloway is intriguing in terms of his talent and when he's likely to be drafted. I'm interested in how he tests at the Combine because, I think he might not be "athletic" enough for this coaching staff. Probably the best fit of talent and when he'll be selected is Jon Asamoah from Illinois, again I am not sure if I want to spend a 2nd rounder, but I suppose I'll have to bite the bullet. That's IF he's still around at pick #50, since I've seen him off the board at #37.

The Secondary is no different really. We can forget about being able to take Eric Berry in the first round, the word is out that he's pretty good. Joe Haden is also most likely gone before we make a pick. There is going to be some sentiment to select Longhorn Earl Thomas to be our ballhawk. The question is can we afford to take a player who isn't very good at tackling and is small for the position that could lead to injury? If all we want is a player to sit back in Zone and make Interceptions, might we take a CB like Syd'Quan Thompson in the 2nd round and tell him to help out when he can against the run without getting himself killed? Ah, there's that 2nd round pick again that I was going to spend on Asamoah. Wait a minute, the CB's in this draft are not very good in all phases of the game either. I have my eye on Kyle Wilson, but he's probably a 2nd round pick too just like Donovan Warren. If I were able to luck out and have Brandon Ghee available at pick #83 in the 3rd round, I'd be pretty happy.

We'd like a RB too in this draft, and the best chance to get one that will be a difference maker is in the 3rd round. That's assuming Toby Gerhart or Ben Tate are still on the board. Perhaps we get another Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty. I know he absolutely killed the University of Kentucky when I watched that game.

I personally would like a LB to take the place of Diles. We have Freeman on the roster and it will be interesting to see if Adibi continues to draw a check. I have a long history of projecting LBs higher than when they are actually drafted. A perfect example is Brandon Siler of the Florida Gators, now Chargers. I'm hopeful that short Bulldog LB Rennie Curran falls into this category. It would great if he "fell" to the 5th round.

The 6th and 7th round is going to go towards players who may "grow" into their position. I wouldn't mind drafting a big, slow CB who could project into the FS position. Brian Jackson of Oklahoma or Chris Cook are who I'm thinking of specifically. Then there is the idea of Caldwell being a guard, in which case we could draft a OC late like Eric Olsen - Notre Dame, John Estes - Hawaii, or Jeff Byers - USC.

So, in my perfect scenario we trade out of the first round with KC Chiefs and get picks: #36, #68, #138, #163. Then the draft would look like this...

#36 - OG Jon Asamoah 6'4" 308 5.08 Illinois
#50 - CB Donovan Warren 6'0" 185 4.42 Michigan
#68 - FS Brandon Ghee 6'0" 191 4.45 Wake Forest
#83 - RB Toby Gerhart 6'1" 235 4.55 Stanford
#115 - LB Rennie Curran 5'11" 225 4.56 Georgia
#138 - DT Mike Neal 6'3" 300 4.96 Purdue
#146 - OC Ted Larsen 6'2" 300 5.24 North Carolina St
#163 - QB John Skelton 6'5" 245 4.88 Fordham
#177 - DT Corey Peters 6'3" 295 4.95 Kentucky
#187 - OC Jeff Byers 6'3" 299 5.22 USC
#210 - Given to KC in trade

Using your trade scenario I would go best OC and CB first. I'm tired of seeing our centers getting blown up by big 3-4 NT's. Pouncey offers a good combination of size, athleticism and experience along with a nasty demeanor. Kyle Wilson, I thought played well in the senior bowl and gets the nod here.

I also get Walter McFadden to help out the secondary as a FS. He really had a knack for the ball this season and if that fails, we know he's already a lockdown defender.

Linval Joseph, who's a junior, can be brought along slowly and will eventually start. Scott helps bolster our often injured O line and M. Johnson gives us some quality depth for the often knicked up LB's.

Bell backs up Foster and Tate and Lawrence challenges to start at WILL.

#36 - Maurkice Pouncey OC Florida
#50 - Kyle Wilson CB Boise St
#68 - Lamarr Houston DT Texas
#83 - Walter McFadden FS/CB Auburn
#115 - Ben Tate RB Auburn
#138 - Linval Joseph DT ECU
#146 - Chris Scott OT Tennessee
#163 - Micah Johnson ILB Kentucky
#177 - Joique Bell RB Wayne St
#187 - Simoni Lawrence OLB Minn
#210 - Given to KC in trade

Don't we have an extra sixth from Oakland? How about trying to package it in with our pick in some earlier round to try to move up, say in the first for DT Dan Williams?

Roy did you happen to notice this guy during the Shrine game? Rodger Saffold OT 6'5" 305 Indiana. The press on him was he stonewalled everybody, could be a OG prospect.

from nfldraftscout.com

Quote:
02/16/10 - PRO POTENTIAL: For a team that suffered through back-to-back losing seasons, the Hoosiers sure are raising a lot of eyebrows in the NFL ranks. Indiana will send four players to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis later this month, and IU should be well-represented come draft weekend. OT Rodger Saffold - Saffold was a four-year starter in Bloomington and he was one of the standouts during the week of practice leading up to the East-West Shrine game. Saffold has good footwork and will be an intriguing prospect for NFL teams.

01/20/10 - EAST-WEST SHRINE RISERS: OT Roger Saffold, Indiana: It's hard to argue anyone but Saffold was the best player on the field this week. He was strong, moved his feet well in pass protection and when drive-blocking gave good effort through the end of plays, and was mobile enough to hit targets at the second level. Some scouts will project him inside, but it appears the 3.5-year starter at left tackle should at least get a chance to prove he can handle those responsibilities. A third-round selection seems likely for Saffold at this point in the process. - Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com

01/19/10 - East-West Shrine Tuesday Practice: The matchup between Ole Miss defensive end Greg Hardy and Indiana tackle Roger Saffold was worth the price of the flight to Orlando. Saffold controlled Hardy in most one-on-one drills, eating up a spin move, turning him and allowing him no space in which to work. - Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com

01/18/10 - East-West Shrine Monday Practice: Indiana offensive tackle Roger Saffold is a player to watch - the explosion he displayed coming out of his stance and his mobility to the second level were impressive, even without pads on. On one play, he gave Purdue defensive tackle Mike Neal a good ride off the snap, and Neal has plenty of strength himself. Saffold has the strength and footwork to be among the 10 tackles potentially selected in the top 100 this year. - Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com

Yes, I saw him on a couple of plays. I was more focused on Kyle Calloway on the other side to be honest. I'm trying to get a feel for which round Saffold would be a value at the LG. If Mike Johnson and Jon Asamoah are off the board before we pick in the 3rd, then I may be willing to "reach" for this guy. First, I want to see what he does at the Combine and get a feel for his strength and agility.

My perfect draft? not a make everyone think type draft, ok here goes:

28 Dan Williams DT 6'3" 312 Tennessee
51 Myron Rolle S 6'2" 215 Florida State
60 Jon Asamoah OG 6'5" 309 Illinois
*70 Dexter McCluster RB 5'8" 165 Mississippi
82 Amari Spievey* CB 6'0" 190 Iowa
119 LeGarrette Blount RB 6'2" 240 Oregon
152 Rodger Saffold OT/OG 6'5" 305 Indiana
190 Cam Thomas DT 6'3" 330 North Carolina
200 John Skelton QB 6'5" 258 Fordham
231 Kerry Meier WR 6'3" 216 Kansas

*#70 - I gave my 2011 2nd rounder to Oakland for there #6 pick in the 3rd round.

Dan Williams plays both DT positions
Rolle starts next to Pollard, backed up by Barber and Nolan
Asamoah starts at RG from day one, Saffold has to work his way into starting lineup.
McCluster is 3 roster spots, KR, WR so Anderson/Jones/Davis are all on notice, and RB. Only his blocking is in question. Blount is the backup change of pace back until he learns the blocking scheme.
Spievey is what we thought Molden would be, should push for playing time and start in year 2.
Thomas should be the NT that I wanted Okam to be.
Skelton is a project QB. #3 behind winner of Booty/Orlovsky for #2.
Meier is a former QB turned WR, has size and speed, project. Plus I'm friends with his uncle.

2011 and beyond OL - Brown, Saffold, Caldwell, Asamoah, Winston

Does the descision not to retain Dunta change my draft stratigy?

I might look at Kyle Wilson #30 in this draft or Donovan Warren # 50 at the #28. If they run in the mid 4.4 and show good hip flip. I have them as #2 and 3 of the CBs precombine.

My thing is I have Dan Williams as one of the best players coming out this year.

The answer to your question should be "no" because of the statement you made.

The draft is meant to get the best talent you can find when you pick.

Dunta not coming back changes my draft completely, putting an emphasis on CB early, as well as RB, and FS.

28 Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan
51 Reshad Jones, FS, Georgia
60 Anthony Dixon, RB, Miss St
*70 Daryl Washington, ILB, TCU
82 Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
119 Eric Olsen, OC, Notre Dame
152 Rodger Saffold, OT/OG, Indiana
190 Leigh Tiffin, K, Alabama
200 Jay Ross, DT, East Carolina
231 Brian Jackson, CB, Oklahoma

FA Signings

Brandon Minor, RB, Michigan
Joe Thomas, OG, Pitt
Antonio Coleman, DE, Auburn

After rewatching the Senior Bowl, i have changed my mind. What if we had a Dwight Freeney type DE to pair with Mario?

#20 Brandon Graham DE 6'2" 270 Michigan
#50 Devin McCourty CB 5'11" 190 Rutgers blocked 7 kicks in his career
#82 Lamarr Houston DT 6'2" 300 Texas
119 Ben Tate RB 5'11" 211 Auburn
152 Rodger Saffold OT 6'5" 305 Indiana
190 Cam Thomas DT 6'3" 330 North Carolina
200 Andre Anderson RB 6'0" 212 Tulane
231 Klint Kubiak S 6'0" 212 Colorado State

My future DL is Mario, Thomas, Houston, Graham
McCourty is solid with the play in front of him, but gives up the long ball to often. High Risk/Reward guy
Houston, almost unblockable high motor guy
Tate all around RB
Saffold LG prospect
Thomas one of Roy's guys
Anderson carried his college team
Kubiak, momma told husband to draft him.

OK what are we looking at here as our most pressing needs ? CB,C/G,RB and perhaps DT & safety but to a lesser degree. Given the crop of FAs becoming available in March, would the Texans be realistic to expect they could fill one of those needs for the upcoming campaign in FA and thereby give themselves more flexibility in the Draft ?

OG/C can be filled with Casey Wiegmann and/or Ben Hamilton. They both started for Rick Dennison in Denver. Both are more of the undersized guys preferred by Alex Gibbs' influenced offenses.

Signing one of these guys would allow you to draft a development type guy later in the draft, guys like Adam Ulatoski of Texas.

At Safety you might pursue a Darren Sharper, other wise the FA DBs are very thin. As are the FA RBs.

Currently this is one of the worse years ever for FAs.

CB Leigh Bodden or DeShea Townsend to replace Dunta Robinson.

DT Fred Robbins

FS Jared Page (KC rejects might find a home with Lil' Coach Gibbs)

RB Larry Johnson (See what Ced Benson did after we passed on him)
