Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)

by Keith Weiland

In spite of their delays, the Texans reportedly are finally ready to part ways with two players over whom several fans aren't likely to shed many tears. Word leaked early that backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels will be traded to the Vikings when the new league year begins on Friday. The Texans are also preparing to release defensive end Anthony Weaver this week as well.

For Rosenfels, a justifiable punching bag here and elsewhere, the trade comes a year late and a round short. Reportedly the Vikings were willing to part with a third round pick to acquire Rosenfels a year ago; instead, the Texans will come away with a fourth rounder.

Oh, I'm not sad. Even Toro thinks it's a slam dunk. Getting ANYTHING in exchange for a backup, much less one prone to the most tragi-comic turnovers in the history of football at any level, is cause for the kind of naked, party-boy antics favored by rock gods (at least the 80s versions of them).

So, Sage, nice knowin' ya. Say hi to Charley Casserly for me in Minnesota (surely he's on the other end of this trade, right?). Midnight late Thursday night can't quite get here fast enough. I don't want the Purple to get cold feet and all.

As for Weaver, I thought since he avoided the axe two weeks ago that maybe he might have been given another chance here (yeah, I thought maybe that might be the case, read my somewhat misguided reasons why here). While reasons for the delay in his departure aren't yet known, perhaps it is because the team had been asking Weaver to take a pay cut, and he finally chose not to accept it.

Either way, his days are numbered, and anticipation for Friday's open to the free agent signing window is now at a fever pitch. With hints dropped that the Texans might be poised to make a sizeable splash this year, it's hard not to get a little antsy.
