Steelers' Mendenhall fractures shoulder, will be placed on IR
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall left his first career start, a Monday night game against the Baltimore Ravens, early in the third quarter with what eventually was diagnosed as a fractured left shoulder, ending the rookie's season.
Mendenhall, an Illinois product, was starting in place of Willie Parker, who suffered a knee sprain in last Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The rookie had nine carries for 30 yards before leaving the contest with Baltimore.
After Pittsburgh's 23-20 overtime victory, head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Mendenhall will be placed on injured reserve with the fractured left shoulder. The head coach also gave the somber news on starting offensive guard Kendall Simmons, who will join Mendenhall on IR thanks to a torn Achillies.
