Default Texans Trade for LT Laremy Tunsil

Now it's reported that we completed a deal for Tunsil.

I'm happy with that almost no matter what that deal looks like. Young OL stars are almost impossible to get. I assume the 3rd rounder we obtained is part of it.

But it still doesn't make up for us tanking Clowney's value by not trading him 6 weeks ago. 6 weeks ago we could have dealt him for a 1st and a 3rd. Now we got just a 3rd and probably gave up our own 1st in the Tunsil deal.

I spoke too soon. I assumed a 1st and the 3rd we just got. That is an absurd price to pay even for a very good young LT. Not to mention we pointlessly took on the $8 million salary of a guy who was about to be cut.

The performance of Bill O'Brien the coach is up for debate. I happen to like him well enough but I understand the viewpoint of those who don't.

The performance of Bill O'Brien the GM is not up for debate. This is the worst 6 weeks an NFL team has ever had. They managed to make Clowney worthless and followed it up with this wild trade.

And in between they dealt for a veteran RB who lost the battle for the backup job in KC and would likely have been cut. We gave up a 2018 3rd round pick from our OL in that deal.

Is it possible O'Brien is tanking the roster in spite before leaving after the season? These moves seem beyond possibility.

I am almost rooting against the Texans and hoping Deshaun Watson doesn't bail these idiots out.

Bill O'Brien is trying to sew up the worst GM of all time title.

The Vikings GM says hold my beer Bill...

And trades a 5th round pick for a non-rookie kicker who had never kicked in a regular season game. Then less than a month later they cut him.

It amazes me some of these guys are employed in the NFL.

Keith: Is the Clowney deal the worst trade in Texans history?

BOB: LOL hold my beer.

It’s actually 3 firsts when you include this year’s pick for supposedly the LT of the future. Miami would have undoubtedly done this deal in March and would have saved us a 1st.

And to think all of this is because Rick Smith refused to negotiate with Duane Brown with 2 years left on his deal.

It boggles my mind that they fked the Duane Brown situation up so thoroughly.

Good thing I have a fresher memory of their dicking around and losing all their leverage with Clowney to distract me.

Not satisfied with shooting themselves in the foot this morning, whoever is running the Texans (O'Brien?) decided it was good to shoot themselves in the other foot later in the afternoon.

I thought the Dolphins were going to have a mutiny if Tunsil was traded. So are they now ready to walk out in a show of - what - displeasure?

Yes, three first rounders on one position (LT). Crazy. Trade away those 1st rounders "like you just don't care"!

Tunsil better be good, like, all-pro good for many years. Goodness gracious....

The NFL world wants to know, what are the Texans and Bill O'Brien doing?:

Quote:
On cutdown day in the NFL, there were a flurry of moves. Maybe teams got better, or worse, but mostly the moves made sense.

Then there’s the Houston Texans, who seemed to be unanimously ruled a loser of a hectic Saturday.

The Texans have famously gone without a general manager since Brian Gaine was suddenly fired, and maybe that was a mistake. The feeling is that coach Bill O’Brien is the main decision maker, though there is officially a committee operating as the Texans’ GM.

And they made moves that puzzled the NFL on Saturday.

...................

Houston getting left tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Dolphins isn’t bad. He’s a good, young player and Deshaun Watson needs some protection. Receiver Kenny Stills seems a bit redundant with Will Fuller and Keke Coutee on the roster. And for Tunsil and Stills, the Texans gave up ... two first-round picks and a second-round pick. That’s massive. Houston also got a fourth-round pick back, and the Dolphins got special teamer Johnson Bademosi and offensive tackle Julie’n Davenport, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

We’re basically stuck with the current team (or less) for the next few years. Between the lost draft picks and the money we’re about to shell out to Tunsil and Watson (and maybe JJ again), we have very little ability to improve the team. I just can’t see us adding a significant piece in the next few years absent getting extremely lucky with a mid to late round pick, which is not their strength.

So, do you think the current roster is a championship one? I guess we’ll find out.

Split the Tunsil trade discussion from the Clowney thread.

Quite possibly one of the most if not the most amazing days as a Texans fan. So much to digest.

The Tunsil trade only makes sense if the Texans sign him long term, and the thought is that the team is positioned to offer Tunsil an incredible contract.

Was it expensive? To the point it was painful? Yes. But... what is a franchise LT worth? Followng the surprising early retirement of an anguished Andrew Luck, what is the health of your young quarterback worth? If it meant bringing a healthy Luck back, what would the Colts have paid for such a left tackle?

The armchair GM in all of us really understands the value of draft picks. But the draft is and will continue to be a crapshoot. Tunsil's value is understood. Watson's value as a healthy QB is even better understood.

To think, if the Texans (meaning the previous GM) had just moved up a spot to draft the LT from Washington St. instead of watching the Eagles leap up and grab him, this whole exercise would have never happened. I just hope by the time of the 2021 draft we still think Bong Boy is an elite LT. Otherwise, this trade will make the Clowney trade appear sane.

And Stills? I just hope he can stay healthy, unlike Will the Thrill and KK Cutie. All we need is somebody who can take some pressure of D-Hop without winding up on IR. Can anyone step up, please?

It certainly leaves open the possibility that the Texans will trade D-Hop next spring to get some of those draft picks back.

Not to worry because the wily coach O'Brien might put together a package of Watkins & JJ Watt to finesse a third round pick from his x-coach in Boston.

The Tunsil trade in a vacuum is not terrible. It's an overpay, but it's an overpay at one of the two positions where an overpay is acceptable.

The bigger problem is (1) tanking Clowney's value when he could have recouped half of what you spent on Tunsil if you traded him 2 months ago. Then (2) spending a 1st and a 2nd on OTs who will now not play LT. If you traded for Tunsil 2 months ago then you don't waste those picks and you let Tunsil learn the offense and his OL teammates instead of showing up before week 1.

It all demonstrates a total lack of long term planning. The kind of thing you'd expect of a GM who isn't solely (and rightly) focused on getting ready for 2019 games. There is a reason coaches don't have GM power anymore. They are 2 very different jobs.

Considering the team went out and got him while he was not just kneeling but attacking the NFL on social justice and the JayZ deal... and I haven't seen a peep anywhere about it, you may be projecting here.

Apparently the founders son has a much different and more tolerant attitude about such issues than the old man did ?
