Default Five roster spots to fill

With Tim Dobbins released today, Texans now have 5 open roster spots.

Four who are gone were linebackers.

I guess they will get a. Rback and some linebackers who are good at special teams.

Shall see how this develops during this bye week.

Aside from the loss of Cush, which is going to suck enough by iteself, my only real concern with this whole deal is the RB spot. Foster indicated he would be ready by the Colts game, but hammy's are tricky. Tate has 4 broken ribs.

That's not how you want your entire stable of RB's going into a game.

I'm trying to figure out if Kubiak is shrewd enough to have constructed this, you know, cutting Wood knowing that Foster might not be fully healthy again this year and that Tate has broken ribs, cutting an ostensibly healthy Dobbins knowing that the team is incredibly thin at the position.

So are we switching to a 5-1-5 defense with Joe Mays in the middle?

I doubt it. Plenty of coaches make weaselly roster moves aimed far more at protecting their job and creating circumstances to blame/call for patience (Schiano is the latest), but I don't think Kubs is that guy. If he had that killer/survival instinct (or shrewdness like you call it), we probably wouldn't be 2-5 in the first place.

That's a good point. I'm probably searching for reason where there is none.

There could be other motives, I just doubt self-preservation is one of them. I think it far more likely this is some effort to show everyone how serious and focused they are.

I believe that to be correct. Lopping off a few heads will shake up the rest of the employees.....

I am surprised that the team did not sign anyone before now. IMO you get the new guy into the playbook asap. I don't get the waiting until ?Wednesday? to sign guys.

Sign the guys, get them under contract before another team can. And get them into the playbook.

Deji is a no brainer, he can return kicks and knows the playbook.

@JasonLaCanfora: The Texans, in addition to signing FA RB Deji Karim on Monday, will also be signing RB Dennis Johnson from the Browns practice squad

That makes me worry about Tate and Foster this week. Two guys that know the system.

@McClain_on_NFL: Texans R promoting RB Ray Graham 2 roster from PS. They're signing ILBs Tavares Gordon and Jeff Tarpinian. The 53-man roster will be full.

Really concerned about Foster and Tate now....

Tevares Gooden and Jeff Tarpinian appear should help special teams and ILB depth. Gooden, 6'1" 240 lb, had two years Baltimore and two years San Francisco. Tarpinian, 6'3" 245 lb, had one year with New England and one with Carolina.

Three Running backs is one more than I expected. Tate with 4 cracked ribs I expected was out for a while. I guess this let's them go slow with Fosters hammy although it sounded like he'd be back against Indy. Maybe not.

And. Deji and Dennis give options for return game.

It did seem to take a while to name the five guys.

Is it really that difficult for someone who makes his living as a writer (quotation marks available at additional charge) to write are rather than R on his motherfkkking twitter? I mean, seriously. That fat fkkk has better job security than Kubiak.

Maybe I should start writing to that idiot again. He usually answered. I don't know whether that's to his credit or his shame.

The shame's probably mine, now that I think about it. I'm going to go and lick my palms 4 a while and contempl8t it.

so the five are official, from www.houstontexans.com

The Texans signed three running backs and two inside linebackers to the 53-man roster during the bye.

Dennis Johnson, Deji Karim, and Ray Graham participated in training camp in August. Graham, who was already on the practice squad, was placed on the active roster.

Tavares Gooden, sixth-year veteran, was a starting linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. Gooden, a 2008 third-round draft pick from the University of Miami, has logged 73 tackles, one pass defensed, and one forced fumble in his NFL career. Jeff Tarpinian, a third-year linebacker from Iowa, was recently on the practice squad for the Carolina Panthers.
