I was thinking they would take Wilson. Wilson was still available yet they chose Jackson. They are the experts and obviously they scout all these players extensively. They liked Jackson better and I trust them that they made the right choice.

6 min video clip on the official of DC Frank Bush explaining why the team selected Jackson.

http://www.houstontexans.com/tv/inde...54&play_clip=Y

Worth watching, but the short version is they like his toughness, his championship pedigree, and his ability to come from a complex D that Saban ran at Alabama to contribute immediately in the NFL.

Jackson is the most ready to play today of the 3 CBs I had targeted for us, but IMO his upside is not as high as Wilson's. McCourty was passed by our guys for some reason, so I have to assume Ray Rhodes liked the Saben trained junior better than the other two, and I will trust his track record over mine.

It looks like the Texans were really after Ryan Mathews when you look at Frank Bush's comments. I think San Diego caught Houston and Seattle by suprise when they jumped up to 12 and nabbed Mathews.

(on if they were set on a defensive player as the time got close) "We were set on defense. Of course you know there's two sides to the board as you look at the draft board and the offense had their guys that they really wanted and we had the guys that we wanted and as the things start to shake out, you know some things happened that we didn't forsee and then we had an opportunity to basically go back in and discuss the defensive players and this was a guy that we really wanted. He was a guy that we had really high on our draft board as far as defense is concerned and so that gave us an opportunity to go get him. We had a need in a lot of different positions as you guys understand and we were looking at running back but we also had a need at corner. We felt like this was a player that we had to go get."

I didn't like the 1st round only draft on a thursday night. It was too frantic of a pace and I really think alot of teams rushed their decisions. For all the millions these teams will be paying these 1st round players I think they should go back to the 15 minute per pick 1st round.

I do like our pick though. I think Frank Bush is a really good defensive coach and he knows how to get players that fit his scheme. As I've said before, the only way the Texans make the playoffs is to let Bush build an elite defense that can over come Kubiak's coaching blunders.

I think I still like the marathon Saturday draft better because we got more rounds and it was exciting to see how teams would react and build as Rounds 2 and 3 progressed. With that being said, I did like the pace of the 1rst Rd. last night. For the most part, these teams know the players they want well before the draft so I don't think the amount of time a team has or takes to get the selection card up has much bearing. If a trade is there, it's likely there early... If not, get it moving!

I used to hate it when a team would take the full 15/10 minutes only to draft the guy everybody and their brother thought they would draft to start with. I think it was obvious last night that the NFL owners and commish knew they were in prime time and needed to pick the pace to keep the average viewer interested. It appeared to me they went in with the idea or mandate that if the team knew who they wanted and had no intention of trading the pick, then don't waist time and get the card up to the podium.

One big advantage I saw last night was that each team at least got the opportunity to make their selection when the live cameras were on. No one (*cough* Texans) was left out of annoucing a pick by a frickin' commercial break.

I never understood why Goodell chose thursday in the first place. Wouldn't it make a ton more sense to have it on friday, saturday and sunday. The draft parties would be spread over an entire weekend. Rounds 2 and 3 could start earlier on a saturday like around 1 or 2 pm instead of late again because it is another weekday.

To the contrary, I got a big kick out of last nights first round.
The surprising move by the Jags to grab the DT at 10 who many had as a 3rd rounder, the trade for Mathews by SD, and the surprise to me of Tebow going in the first-round. And who even heard Denver was a suiter ?
And best of all I like our pick.
The pace was frenetic, but exciting and entetaining I thought.

Would you be ok with the draft staying with the same format as this year except moving to friday, saturday, and sunday?

Lance Z had him as a 1st rounder in the 20's, and most real exports had him as a solid early 2nd rounder. But no one had him as a top 10 pick.

I find the Tebow pick by Denver to be the dumbest pick, didn't they just get their QB of the future in Quinn?

Someone pointed out that it was telling the Patriots and Ravens passed on the opportunity to select Kyle Wilson, New England preferring McCourty and Baltimore trading out. Those two teams seem to know what they are doing when it comes to the draft and I guess it has to do with Kyle not being as physical as the other two. Also some have said Wilson has more upside, but I can't see that as Jackson is an underclassman (Wilson a Senior) and Saban was reportedly upset he chose to leave believing he needed more seasoning to get even better and become a first rounder.

I think Jackson was the safest pick, he is NFL ready, but he does not have the upside that Wilson has.

I ask John McClain if this is the Texans admitting that they do not think they can coach a player up to reach his full potential?

John, Jackson seems to be the safe pick. He is the most NFL ready, no mention of the upside. Do you think the Texans are really saying they do not believe their coaches can develop a player to reach his full potential?

John McClain:
They're saying they need a CB to start right now. Bush said he has a tremendous upside.
I still think Wilson or McCourty have higher upside and Bill Belichick taking McCourty points to that, IMO.

I think that was the reason for the pick. Trying to make the playoffs now calls for someone ready to step in and start rather than waiting a year or two for the player to get up to potential. I like up side but with Robinson gone the need is now rather than later for a quality starter. If Jackson is the player then I have no problem with the pick.
