I don't think competition level is overly important when grading a RB.

Chris Johnson came out of East Carolina. He had four 100 yard games as a senior against Houston, UTEP, Memphis, and Tulane. How do those run defenses compare to Boise St? The only good team CJ played as a senior was Virginia Tech and he had 10 carries for 29 yards.

Michael Turner, Deangelo Williams, LT, and Bryan Westbrook are all small school backs who have been in the top 5 in the NFL Rushing in the past 5 years. And Willie Parker never saw the field even though he went to UNC.

Meanwhile only Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Lewis, and Shaun Alexander have been able to crack the top 5 in Rushing in the past 5 years from the Big 12 and SEC (the two best conferences in College Football).

I would bet there is less correllation between competition level and success at RB then at any other position.
