Second Cut to 53 [Plus Practice Squad, Signed McClover]
My feed went out right as it started, but notable cuts I think I heard/saw...
Roosevelt Colvin Shane Boyd Alex Brink Anthony Maddox Glenn Earl Kevis Coley Darius Walker Greg Eslinger Jamar Fletcher Derick Roberson Mark Simmons Torrin Tucker Marcel Shipp Dexter Wynn Jesse Nading Ben Moffitt LeRon McCoy Gabe Long Ryan Krause Darnell Jenkins Jon Abbate Chris Brown not cut apparently, but one cut to go. Have to wonder if they are renegotiating with him too. |

Given the comments in the press conference, as well as my thoughts, I'm guessing that these are the 8 we're hoping for on our PS, although we might have to get lucky on waiver wire claims for a few of these.
Projected PS Darius Walker Derrick Roberson Jon Abbate Ben Moffitt Gabe Long Kevis Coley Shane Boyd/Alex Brink Jesse Nading There was also considerable mention of watching the waiver wires for RBs. |
I am a little surprised we only kept 4 corners and cut Maddox. I think Kubes said Harrison might work outside some. We are light at corner and RB and heavy on the OL.
I would expect we pick up another back, release Brown. I think Smith and staff are pretty good about keeping an eye out for players who are going to become available. |

Not quite sure what they're up to with Brown. It's like last night's game had no meaning for some of these guys.... |
The biggest head scratchers for me.
Zgonina over Maddox, perhaps they think his work habbit and experience is better to have than a guy that would most likely be inactive for most of the season. 6 Tackles? Cliff Washburn who, maybe he is the bubble guy with C. Brown atm? I know they wanted Frye to play G, maybe they think he could play either in a pinch. That and Salaam and Butler are both injured atm. Brown-- They may be trying to put him on IR, I never thought he made the team anyway. Biggest issues going forward. Injured Salaam, Butler, C. Brown, Adibi, Thompson. Salaam is the only one that may not hit the IR. Light in the CB department until Dunta returns. Key areas to expect trades or pickups. CB and LB. Players I think have movement potential. C. Brown (IR or cut) Butler (IR) Adibi (IR) Thomson (IR) Frye (cut) Washburn (cut) Zgonina (cut) |

I think cutting Walker is a mistake. There will be some decent RBs cut by tomorrow though. Props to Kalu for surviving as well as the other oldies... Ferguson, Zgonina. I hate seeing Maddox cut. He's a football player. And raise your hand if you're surprised Faggins made the cut... not me. He's not CB2 quality, but I think I'd rather have him starting against the Steelers than Reeves or Molden. |
I was glad to see Petey compete last night. He tackled and covered, even though it was against back-ups, you need to start to rebuild confidence somewhere.
I think Washburn is a canidate to be cut. We can't keep that many OL. I would have not relaeased maddox and kept a scrub OL. |

McClain, on the radio just now, didn't mention Walker as one of the possible PS guys.... If that turns out to be the case, then I hope for DW's sake that someone picks him up and he has success elsewhere.... Sounds like they may be cruising the waiver wire for another RB but anybody they bring in won't be familiar with the system. Whatevar... |

Totally agree, this maybe be the game that gets his confidence going and be the player we thought he would be (like the game against the Colts a few years back). I am totally pissed we didn't cut C. Brown. |
Anyone else find it odd that Bulman is still listed on the roster and depth chart at the official site.

Chris Brown will either be PUP or cut, I think that is the investigation. Washburn is gone as soon as Salaam and or Butler get back healthy. Also I have a feeling they are going to look real hard at Adibi for the IR. Lastly listening to Smith, they are going to pick up a RB, and it might be Walker, but it might be some one on another team currently. Watch out for WCO RBs that are cut. |

Although I am pissed we didn't cut Brown, I don't think we can because he's injured. How does that rule work?

I am little shocked that we cut Maddox, and Fletcher.

Chris Brown sent to IR.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5975236.html I sorta buried this in a rant I had about Reeves sucking, but when a team blows as many UFA signings (those for more than the vet min) as this team has, then someone in the pro scouting department needs to go. That someone is probably Bobby Grier, the associate director of pro scouting, the man responsible for pro scouting with the Texans since the beginning (and the man with the Pats before they started winning Super Bowls). |

Flannagan and Green were Sherman picks, and he may not have had much to do with it. The other Denver prospects were Kubes and Smith. His track record before Smith got here sucks though. I havent seen Reeves play a real snap so I will hold judgement until the end of the 4th game. |
Chris Brown has been put on IR. Why not just cut him, unless its too difficult or impractical for the Texans to work out some kind of injury settlement with him for a release ?

Here's a good link to all the cuts from all the teams (snagged from Manfull's blog):

any scouting report on McClover?
|
Where did Moffit end up? I kinda liked what he did...
|
They have to be deciding on a QB for the PS, don't they? If Schaub goes down on week 5, where are they? Same as last year.
If they do not sign Brink then they wasted a pick that should hace been Aldridge. At least he is getting paid real player money right now. I don't think they would sign Simms at QB and no other WCO guys that jump at me as being better then the guys we cut. Plus 3 RBs, with one being a glass waiting to break is a questionable move. When I look at other teams, no one carries only 3 Rbs. Guys miss to many games, so they need #'s. Also a RB I liked as a guy to watch is available BenJarvus Green-Ellis, he would be worth a PC spot to me. Also Noah Herron had a good preseason for GB, he should be looked at. |
Simms is an interesting case. His problem is that, like Carr, he is just not football smart. I watched him last week and he was making the same mistakes he made as a rookie. I hate to use the word choker because I think it is way overused, but I think that's exactly what Simms is. With his good size, decent mobility, strong arm, and excellent accuracy, he should be one of the top QBs in the NFL. But as soon as the ball is hiked, he seems to go into a brain freeze.
I guess I wouldn't mind him as an emergency if we lost Schaub and Rosenfels, but I don't think he will ever work out his problems. Guys like him are just as likely to get worse as they are to get better. Look at Carr. |

It's a signing with upside, and considering how the Texans are desperate for a situational pass rusher, I like this move. The Panthers only invested a seventh rounder in McClover (2006), and I guess they grew tired of waiting for him to develop, not sure. |
I actually think that David could still do a fairly good job on a team which has good protection and a solid running game. He can operate pretty well in the short passing game. It's when he has to hold on to the ball long enough for long routes to develop that he starts melting down. If there is any kind of rush at all, he completely loses his downfield focus. Then bad things start to happen.
David actually had a fairly decent season about four years ago or so. If I remember correctly, we had a pretty solid running game that year. I've never seen Simms look like he could play well enough to come close to that performance. In all my years watching football, I don't think I've ever seen a QB get more passes batted down than Simms does. Which is pretty strange, considering how many QB guys are shorter than him. I just don't think he's football smart. I don't think he has ever relaxed enough in games to start enjoying himself and learning how to maximize his talents. |

Also, the Titans released one of my favorites in Ingle Martin. |

I remember a couple of weeks ago reading somewhere that Colvin's weight this year was down to around 245. When I saw that, it made me wonder how he could play DE even on passing downs. If McClover really weighs 262 like the stats say, and if he has a great burst off the edge, I could definately see him being the best pass russer we've had opposite Mario since Mario has been with us. I'm very optimistic about McClover, though I can see my optimism only lasting another week or two.
|
I was really excited when we signed Colvin, then TC began and my enthusiasm waned with every game he didn't play in. Makes me mad the way some of these old vets just try to hang around for the danged money. They care nothing about the team, or the fans, that took them in.
|
I hope McGlover pans out because Weaver is a waste. But if he couldn't play opposite of Peppers, I think he's an extreme longshot to play opposite Williams.

The final spot on the practice squad has not gone to Washburn, but instead to another tackle named Alex Stenavich, most recently of the Cowboys.
The 'wagon cut him to allow Larry Allen to sign and retire as a Cowboy. Official site has a mini-bio up on Stenavich already. http://www.houstontexans.com/team/pl...?player_id=367 |

QBs are the hardest guys to train and they have the longest learning curve, so why waste time to just cut them? Schaub has not shown he is Peyton Manning or Brett Favre, so 3 QBs is the smart move. Having 18 OTs does you no good if the QB is already dead. |

didn't peppers fall off the face of the earth last year? i'm not saying he's done by any means but last year he was bad. |
