Default Texans Sign FB Greg Jones

Bringing in Hags FB Greg Jones today for a visit. 31 year old FB that is a hammer.

Is it just me, or are we getting really old, really quickly?

From PFT:
Texans hosting Greg Jones
Posted by Mike Florio on March 26, 2013, 10:16 AM EDT

APThe Texans like to use fullbacks. They also have a habit of losing them.

From Vonta Leach to Lawrence Vickers to James Casey (sort of), the Texans have seen plenty of high-end fullbacks come and go.

Next up could be Greg Jones.

PFT has confirmed that Jones will visit the Texans on Tuesday. An eight-year veteran who has spent his entire career with the Jaguars, Jones became a free agent on March 12. In 2011, he helped clear paths for Maurice Jones-Drew, who led the league in rushing that year.

And MJD isn’t happy about Jones’ potential departure, tweeting “Noooooooo!!!!!!“

The Jaguars had been talking to Jones before the new league year began, and Jones (like many other free agents) has drawn little interest on the open market

I'd rather spend a sixth on a FB unless Mr. Jones is exceptional. FBs are a dying breed with spread offenses and are rarely used on 3rd or 4th down except in short-yardage packages. They aren't worth a lot of money.

Then again, if it ruins Gary Coleman's week, that can't be all bad.

Jags took Forsett. Seems only fair to employ one of Hammurabi's laws.

Greg Jones is one of the best FB in the NFL, plus he does have running skills though they are rarely used. And remember we have the FB we traded for from the Bears last season.

And I agree with the team appearing be adding older vets. I was telling one of my friends that the texans look like they are going all in. Remember Kubiak took a shorter term deal, and he wants to win it all to so he can get a bigger deal. And I have to believe that they know AJ only has a few years in him and they want to win for him also.

Good get:
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) tweeted:
Greg Jones signed with the Texans on 1-year deal today.

John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) tweeted:
Greg Jones one year deal with texans is worth $1 mil. $840 base, $160 to sign. $240 is guaranteed.

Good. If we are not going to use a guy like Casey in creative ways than the best decision is to get a real FB since he is only going to be asked to do the work of a real FB.

I mean if the Texans happen to sign a rookie FA FB right out of college who they like as Arian's lead-blocker and who can also help them on STs, so they keep him and just cut Jones in preseason with only a 240k Cap hit, then how can we go wrong with that deal ? This is clearly a win-win and yea ole Rick is doing a masterful job of managing the cap.
