Default Report: Jaguars release David Garrard

WTF Hags? I love it when division foes are a mess, but what the hell is Jack thinking? Is he trying to get outta there? When they did this with Leftwich, at least they had a "decent" plan B in place.

From PFT:
Report: Jaguars release David Garrard
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 6, 2011, 3:04 PM EDT
APThe Jaguars have done it again.

Just before Week One, they have decided to release their starting quarterback.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports David Garrard was informed he was released, and Luke McCown will start Week One against the Titans. Rookie Blaine Gabbert is the backup to McCown.

It was only four years ago on September 1 that Byron Leftwich was suddenly dropped in favor of Garrard. The Jaguars won a playoff game that season and gave Garrard a huge contract, but he’s slowly regressed since.

This was an economic move above all else. Garrard was due a little more than $8 million this season. It’s hard to be believe the Jaguars think McCown (and Gabbert) gives the team a superior chance to win. But the gap between Garrard and a league average backup like McCown was growing smaller by the year. It’s clear they really wanted to drop Garrard and didn’t think he’d last the season as the starter.

It says a lot that Gabbert couldn’t step up to win the starting job, and the Jaguars still made this move.

UPDATE: The report has been confirmed by ESPN. The Jaguars will hold a press conference at 4:15 p.m. ET.

I think Del Gutter waited as long as he could so the Colts wouldn't be able to sign him.

That #1 pick is going to be worth whole a lot more now with the rookie wage scale. Would the Colts or Jags use it on Luck or sell it to the highest bidder? IMO, the Colts would use it, but the Jags would sell.

Ya know, you may be on to something with that....hadn't thought if it in that manner, but he would definitely be an upgrade over Collins.

Would have thought that Garrard would have signed on with another team before now. Maybe he still wants that $7M bonus.
