I promise you if the Texans have a choice between Jaelen Strong and Melvin Gordon, they will take Strong. They might move down (before free agency, I was thinking there's an excellent chance they would move down but now I'm not so sure - a big time WR may be too great a need.

To me, there's a big drop-off after Cooper, White, Parker and Strong (and I might prefer Strong to Parker), we *have* to get one of the four. Most likely one and possibly two will still be there at #16.

I must admit that my draft board is an amalgation of BPA for the Texans and the Colts. Obviously, the Colts need a RB more than the Texans do, and if I were them, I would probably choose Strong over Gordon simply due to the void created by Andre Johnson. That being said, I just finished a mock draft where I selected Bud Dupree over Strong and still was able to get Sammie Coates in the third round. Personally, I find that scenario highly unlikely, but that's why I continue to run various possible scenarios to update my board.

Just finished another mock draft:

16: R1P16
OLB ALVIN DUPREE
KENTUCKY
51: R2P19
WR JAELEN STRONG
ARIZONA ST.
82: R3P18
G ALI MARPET
HOBART
116: R4P17
OLB JAKE RYAN
MICHIGAN
152: R5P16
RB DAVID COBB
MINNESOTA
175: R5P39
DT DERRICK LOTT
TENNESSEE-CHATTANOOGA
195: R6P19
RB TYLER VARGA
YALE
211: R6P35
C GREG MANCZ
TOLEDO
216: R6P40
CB BOBBY MCCAIN
MEMPHIS
235: R7P18
OLB ALANI FUA
B.Y.U.

I was very happy with my first 2 picks. I went off the board in the 3rd round for Marpet thinking I might be able to get Henry Anderson in the 4th, but got too cute and he didn't fall. Getting Cobb and Varga may have been overkill, but Varga was the BPA and can be used as a FB if needed. If I had known I could get Mancz in the 6th round, I definitely would have gotten my DE from Stanford.

Default NDT Scouting Big Board/Fanspeak.com

16: DT MALCOM BROWN TEXAS
51: RB MELVIN GORDON WISCONSIN
82: WR BRESHAD PERRIMAN CENTRAL FLORIDA
116: G ALI MARPET HOBART
152: DE ANTHONY CHICKILLO MIAMI
175: ILB JAKE RYAN MICHIGAN
195: TE JESS JAMES PENN STATE
211: DE ZA'DARIUS SMITH KENTUCKY
216: QB SHANE CARDEN ECU
235: CB JUSTIN COLEMAN TENNESSEE

Not really sure how they could possibly have Malcom Brown rated in the 50's on their board, but I took this guy at #16 and didn't blink. I know we have Wilfork on a short-lease, but I am thinking long-term. In the immediate future, he plays DE.

Melvin Gordan in the 2nd round? Yes, thank you very much. I wanted an OLB or WR or ILB in the second, but I can't pass on Gordon. BPA.

Perriman in the 3rd round made me very happy, since I think he's got first round talent. He is raw, but we have D-Hop to be the #1. Perriman may overtake him next season. Meanwhile, he stretches the defense by taking the top off.

I loved Marpet at the Senior bowl. He anchors well and can play all 3 interior positions. He can start in a pinch at C if Ben Jones can't or needs to slide to G.

Chickillo is one of my favorites. Another guy who impressed me at the East-West Shrine and Senior Bowls. I feel he was out of position at Miami and even played the 5-Tech in the 3-4. Has a non-stop motor, good blood lines, was a stand-out recruit in High School and simply should not last this long. I see tons of potential filling in for the departed Brooks Reed.

I had to fill my ILB need and was able to snag Jake Ryan. He was moved all over the field at Michigan, but I feel with our D-Line he is going to make plays. He has a nose for the ball and is extremely athletic. His play on the field should motivate Cushing.

This offense needs a TE who can catch in the Red Zone. Maxx and Clive were off the board so I reached a little to make sure I didn't miss on Jessie James. He's 6'7", 33" arms, 37.5" vertical, 10'1" broad jump, 26 reps on the Bench, was recruited by BO'B at Penn State. What's not to love?

I enjoyed watching Z. Smith and Chickillo converging in the backfield around the QB in their Bowl games. So, I decided to keep the party going. Bud Dupree got all the publicity at UK, but Z'Adarius is a hard-worker and gets effort-sacks. He's also good against the run. Clowney and Merciless could surprise me and perform well this season, but I'm grooming these two guys behind them for depth.

Shane Carden is my favorite QB in the draft. He doesn't have the physical gifts that Bryce Petty has, however, I can potentially stash him on the practice squad this season. Like many college QBs, he didn't take many snaps under center, but I liked what I saw in Senior Bowl practices. I watched him throw at the Combine and feel he has the arm to compete at the next level. What impresses most about him is probably his demeanor and leadership qualities. His teammates love him and love playing for him. He has a Brett Favre-type charisma. The 2nd thing I like is how he is in the pocket, I can see him going through progressions and making quick decisions. I have him ahead of Mariota, Hundley, and Petty in that regard and find that will accelerate him at the next level. He reminds me of Ryan Nassib and Jimmy Garoppolo in terms of his football IQ and pocket presence, I loved those guys coming out. He also went to high school in Bellaire, so he's got that going for him.

I suppose Justin Coleman is simply a 'sleeper' in this draft. He went to an SEC school, but I don't hear anyone really talking about him. I am confident he could play the Nickle on day-one. That's right, a 7th round pick who can start. When reporters ask WRs who was the toughest CB they went up against, the common theme is "That guy from Tennessee." He didn't blow up with a 4.3 in the 40, but he ran a respectable 4.53. He uses good technique to mirror. He's not Richard Sherman at only 5' 10 5/8" 185lbs, but he is a willing tackler in run support. He's 'twitchy' to stay with slot WRs as his 6.61-Cone Drill and 3.98-Shuttle would attest. He has good hands to make and Interception and excels in Zone where he can read the QB.

At the owners meetings I thought it was interesting listening to O'Brien talking about his defense, Someone asked about the 3-4, and Bill said that it's funny how little they run out of the 3-4 base. My memory is not sharp at the moment, but I believe it was less than 20% of the time, might have been in the 20s.

That said how often could you go with 2 big DTs? Maybe able to create mismatches and decision for the the opposing teams coaching staff. So drafting Brown could be a prudent move.

Default Thinking out Loud

At #16 I am essentially looking at the possibility of 5 players for the Texans. Obviously, anything can happen on draft day, but the highes probabilities are:

WR DeVante Parker (The last of the Big Three WRs in this class)
DL Malcolm Brown (Not a position of Need, but BPA)
OLB Bud Dupree (Don't see Fowler or Beasley being available)
WR Jalen Strong (Not 'Worth' #16 but a position of need)
OLB Eli Harold (Not 'Worth' #16 but a position of need)

The decision could come down to Strong vs. Harold. At this point, not sure which way I would go if the top 3 are off the board. I would like to trade down and get an extra pick or 2.

At # 51 there are some options that should be available and there are some that may be off the table:

CB Byron Jones / Kevin Johnson (I like both but give the nod to Jones and remember that J.Jo is at the end of his contract)

ILB Benardrick McKinney / Stephone Anthony (Both are guys who pass my eyeball test and are at a position of extreme need for me)

WR Breshad Perriman/Philip Dorsett/Nelson Agholor/Devin Smith (If we don't draft a WR in the 1st round, then these guys seem to be even more important)

OLB Chickillo/Odighizuwa/Orchard (I like Chickillo the most but have seen the other two drafted in the 2nd round, so if we don't get an OLB in the first, it might be smart to get one here.)

At # 82 I am looking to see what happened in the first two rounds but keeping an eye on talent that has 'slipped' to the third round. Obviously, see above - if one of the above players have fallen to me here (Dorsett or Chickillo) then I'm very likely to draft them.

Another guy who I have ranked much higher than where he has been mocked is DE Henry Anderson. He reminds me of Richard Seymour and can't understand why he is not being hyped up. I would draft him in the 2nd and wouldn't be surprised to see New England pick him up at #32 and shock everyone. I have seen him ranked #124 and I have selected him at #116 on some mocks, so splitting the differense, he is the guy I'm looking at for #82.

If we haven't gotten an OLB at this point, Z'Adarius Smith is going to be a 'reach' we would have to make.

The most 'talented' QB in the draft is Bryce Petty in terms of throwing the ball into tight windows and having arm strength to get the ball down the field. He is probably off the board at this point, but I feel comfortable selecting him here.

I would be willing to draft a FS in this slot as well, Eric Rowe and Alex Carter played CB but project to FS and I would also look for Demarious Randall.

If we haven't drafted a WR in the first two rounds, Tyler Lockett makes sense here.

My favorite RB is David Johnson because of the value he would give you this late in the draft.

At #116 I don't believe I can wait any longer for TE Jesse James. If he's unavailable I could look for LBs like Ben Heeney, Jordan Hicks, Mike Hull, or Davis Tull.

If we haven't drafted a WR as of yet, don't worry this is a deep class and I would take a look at Tre McBride, Chris Conley, or Justin Hardy here.

If you want a RB as insurance for Arian Foster, David Cobb, Jeremy Langford, TJ Yeldon, Mike Davis, or Buck Allen could be available.

If I'm concerned that I haven't addressed the FS position I take a look at Prewitt, Sample, or Kurtis Drummond.

At #152 I must have an ILB either Jake Ryan or Bryce Hager. I'm also looking to add an additional WR like Ty Montgomery, Antwan Goodley, or Jamison Crowder. One of my favorite DLs in the draft at this position of the draft is Derrick Lott. This might be the lowest point to draft an Offensive lineman who could start - Mitch Morse or Jamil Douglass.

I'm also keeping an eye open on RBs Tyler Varga, Cameron Artis-Payne, Karlos Williams, and Zach Zenner.

That's really all I can say and have to wait to see where we are and what is left to make comments about the back half of the draft.

Okay, I had my strategy in place, but since I haven't paid for the Premium package to conduct trades, I just went with it. Somebody mentioned drafting Trae Waynes, so figured, "Why not? "

#16 CB Trae Waynes
#51 ILB Bernardick McKinney
#82 DE Henry Anderson
#116 FS Eric Rowe
#152 WR Stefan Diggs
#175 WR Ty Montgomery
#195 RB Tyler Varga
#211 OLB Kyle Emanuel
#216 QB Shane Carden
#235 WR Antwan Goodley

I would have to say that I am very happy with the results as a whole. 3 WRs may be a bit much, but Goodley was too good to pass on.

If Amari Cooper, Kevin White, or Vic Beasley aren't available, trading down and getting another 2nd and/or 3rd round pick is very appealing to me. Here is why:

Eli Harold

Preston Smith

Devin Smith (Just watch the first catch)

Breshad Perriman (The hands aren't that bad)

Stephone Anthony
