Default 4RD Mock

I would take this draft in a heartbeat.

http://draftanalyst.com/updated-four...-one-week-left

1. Ramzyck
2. Kizer
3. Sidney Jones (would be ecstatic to land this guy in RD3)
4. DJ Jones

I wanted to cherry pick, but I really couldn't come up with any better picks.

Rd 2: Roderick Johnson, OT
Rd 3: Sidney Jones, CB
Rd 4: Carlos Watkins, DT

And Watson goes at #34. Wow. Not saying Ramzyck is a bad pick, but if they skip Watson, I imagine there'll be an outcry from Texan fans.....

In CBS' seven-round mock with trades, the Texans sell the farm to draft Patrick Mahomes:

Round Overall Player Notes
1 16 QB Patrick Mahomes II from Baltimore*
1 25 Traded to Baltimore
2 57 Traded to Baltimore
3 89 S Marcus Maye
4 130 Traded to Miami
4 142 CB Brian Allen from Cleveland
5 166 Traded to NY Jets from Miami*
5 169 ILB Blair Brown
5 184 TE Bucky Hodges from Miami*
6 191 OT Brad Seaton from NY Jets*
7 243 Traded to Baltimore

DE Sheldon Richardson from NY Jets*

The Texans are left in quite the pickle at quarterback, and you'd figure that if they can't find a potential starter in the draft, they'll have to turn to free agency to try and make one fit. So when Mahomes makes it out of the top 13 – which may be unexpected with several teams in the top half scouting the top quarterbacks -- Houston gives up the Nos. 25, 57 and 243 picks along with a 2018 fourth to leap up nine spots for the Texas Tech prospect. Coach Bill O'Brien reportedly likes him, so it's time to put those QB whisperer credentials to the test and turn the high-ceiling Mahomes into the starter for a Super Bowl contender.

The big trade keeps the Texans off the clock until late on Day 2 when they add a versatile safety in Maye who could start at either spot in Houston. In an attempt to recoup one of their picks, the Texans swap their fourth-rounder for two fifths, then use the first of those to land Sheldon Richardson from the Jets. Houston has the cap space to fit Richardson for 2017, and he gives the defensive line a huge talent boost while providing as a star insurance policy for J.J. Watt.

Aside from the talented veteran, the Texans land four depth players on Day 3: a big cornerback who needs work if he's going to develop into a starter, an inside linebacker with great instincts, a value tight end who would go higher in a less-stocked class at the position, and a potential swing tackle.

Anyone willing to base the rest of their career on trading up in the first round for a Texas Tech quarterback from a spread offense deserves to be drug-tested.

I'm calling it now. CLE trades up from 12 to 6 to take Trubisky.

The Jets take Mahomes at 12.

Choices 1,2 and 3 ought to be available when we draft. 4,5,and 6 are questionable but plausible. No trades, not that I didn't try:

89: R3P25 WR CHAD HANSEN CALIFORNIA
130: R4P23 TE JORDAN LEGGETT CLEMSON
142: R4P35 CB HOWARD WILSON HOUSTON

Default 5 Round Mock

I personally think that the meat of the draft is in the 3rd round. I'd love to have a bunch of 2nd round picks, but it's easier to accumulate 3rd and 4th rounders. I traded down a couple of times. This is what I ended up with....

57: R2P25 QB DAVIS WEBB CALIFORNIA
70: R3P6 LB ANTHONY WALKER NORTHWESTERN
88: R3P24 C ETHAN POCIC LSU
89: R3P25 S JUSTIN EVANS TEXAS A&M
107: R3P43 EDGE VINCE BIEGEL WISCONSIN
129: R4P22 WR RYAN SWITZER NORTH CAROLINA
130: R4P23 CB JALEN MYRICK MINNESOTA
142: R4P35 TE GEORGE KITTLE IOWA
150: R5P6 TE JEREMY SPRINKLE ARKANSAS
168: R5P24 RB COREY CLEMENT WISCONSIN
169: R5P25 C JON TOTH KENTUCKY

I was able to get my favorite QB in the draft in the 2nd round with the 25th pick. I got an athletic ILB to eventually replace Cushing and be able to play in pass coverage. Pocic I would try at RT and put Toth at RG. Taylor Moton and Dion Dawkins were my targets at #70, but they were selected at #67 and #68. Getting Evans to start at FS at #89 was nice. Biegel can be a Simon replacement. Switzer I can see in the slot battling with Braxton Miller for snaps depending on the situation and potentially a Returner as well. Myrick ran a 4.28 - 40, so I selected him to replace Abouye. Kittle was actually me selecting the wrong player, I wanted Sprinkle, who I then selected at #150. Clement I add the the running back committee to keep Lamar Miller's touches reasonable to keep him healthy.

I traded with the Raiders our 1st Round pick in exchange for their 2nd/3rd/4th/5th. They selected CB Gareon Conley.

I traded with the Jets the 2nd round pick I got from Oakland for their 2 x 3rd round picks and their 5th.

I don't want Watson because he lacks the arm strength to be successful. I would be OK with Mahomes if BOB really likes him (which I doubt VERY seriously) but not trading up for him. Basically, I'm fine with what we have plus a rookie, and if the rookie can be had in the second or third, so much the better. As I've said, I expect the team to draft someone at 25 who can play right away.

The Texans are in a purgatory where if there is ever a very capable quarterback or two they are unlikely to be able to draft him. Obviously every so often they find themselves with a high pick, sometimes THE high pick, and with the way the world works it's never a draft where you might use it for a quarterback. Otherwise, the team is generally too good to be in a position to take someone at the top of the draft. They will have to get lucky or best the other teams in their talent evaluations (ok, get lucky) in order to draft someone who is better than Savage.

I have no idea how good Savage is. None of us does. I like what I've seen. All ten or twelve snaps between hospital visits. But it's going to take some luck to find someone in the second or third round that's better than he is. At this point I think they need to keep at it until they do.

Savage, IIRC, was a low 4th-rounder and he's look good at times but the book is far from written, plus, how well can you demonstrate your skills when you have little time to throw.

As for Watson, he's the only QB I would draft ahead of Webb and for one simple reason. This guy has the 'win' gene. When the game is on the line, he finds a way to win, whether by his legs or by his arm. He went to the national title game twice as "the guy" on Clemson's offense. What big games has Trubisky been in? Kizer? Mahomes? If you play for North Carolina or Texas Tech, the phrase "big game" isn't in their vocabulary. Watson shows up with 80,000 in the stands and figures how to stick it in the end zone.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet Watson goes further than any other QB from this year's draft.

That's sweet to get Webb in the third. I think the Texans had better be ready to move into the mid-second to get Webb if that's who they want.

I had an odd scenario last night with all the Top QBs but Watson still available plus Ramczyk and offers to trade down. I stared at Trubisky for a good long time but I thought with so many QBs still on the board, I could risk Webb in the mid 2nd so I chose T.J. Watt (which would instantly steal headlines) then moved up in the second to take Webb. That meant waiting until the 3rd for an OT where I took a guy from Miami FL.
