Default Official Texans @ Raiders Game Thread, 10/23/2022

The 1-3-1 Texans head out to Las Vegas this Sunday to take on the 1-4 Raiders in an afternoon game on CBS. Both teams are coming off their bye and should be well rested.

The Raiders 4 losses have been by a combined 14 points, i.e., close losses. They may be a team fixing to break out..... QB Derek Carr is having an OK to good year so far - 113/184, 61.4% comp., 1279 yards, 8 TDs, 4 INTs, 87.7 rating. Josh Jacobs gets the bulk of the RB duties - 490 yards, 5.4 avg, 3 TDs. Carr has all-world WR Davante Adams (414 yds, 5 TDs) to throw to and he will also go to WR Mack Hollins (273 yds, 1 TD) and TE Darren Waller (175 yds, 1 TD) among others. The Raider defense is 27th vs. the pass (yds/att) and 6th vs. the run (ypc).

I have no idea how the Texans will do here.... they're a young team coming off a bye, new head coach, on the road, against a Raiders team hungry for wins.... Doesn't look good so hoping for a disciplined, hard fought win or loss - don't beat yourself. Getting blown out would be a disappointment but not shocking....

--------------------------------------------------------------

TV = CBS (channel 11 local), 3:05 pm CST, Sunday, October 23, 2022

Announcers = Greg Gumbel, Adam Archuleta

The line = Raiders by 6½ to 7½

-------------------------------------------------------------

Other Sunday viewing in the Houston area:

FOX (early) = NY Giants @ Jacksonville, Chris Myers, Mark Schlereth

FOX (late) = Kansas City @ San Francisco, Kevin Burkhardt, Greg Olsen

-------------------------------------------------------------

Prime time:

TNF = New Orleans @ Arizona (Amazon)

SNF = Pittsburgh @ Miami (NBC)

MNF = Chicago @ New England (ESPN)

Wow ! They are gonna let us watch the Jags & Giants instead of sticking us with the Cowboys on the early game, that's surprising !
What do you think Arky have we got much of a shot at winning in Vegas this weekend ?
Well anyway keep up the good work Arky - appreciate it !

Re: no Dallas game, I think it has something to do with the way the TV rules are set up. Since, FOX has the doubleheader this week, we only get one CBS game and that would be the home team game in the afternoon. Dallas is also on CBS so we have to take the FOX early game because of the double header rules - Jags @ Giants (fine by me). I think that is the way it works....

I don't think the Texans have much of a chance here. I could be talked into taking the points, though. I think for the Texans to win, Davis Mills will have to turn the corner. Raiders are tough against the run so Dameon Pierce might have a long day. Texans have a better chance of winning through the air, IMO. Sure would like to see more attempts 20+ yards down the field....

Derek Carr replaced for a play by Jarrett Stidham following a hit to his left side.

Jogged back into the game after Stidham's handoff.

Carr complete a few times (3-41) to Davante Adams, setting up Carlson for the 50-yd field goal.

0-3 Raiders, 9:54 1st Q

Texans answer by missing their own 39-yd field goal attempt.

0-3 Raiders, 4:40 1st Q

Mills improvising on a first down with a creative shovel pass to Dameon Pierce.

Pierce, btw, doing it all, some tough, hard-fought yardage, getting gains where there is little to get. Couple short third down runs to get firsts. 9 rushes, 32 yards (3-20 receiving) thus far isn't telling the whole story.

Brevin Jordan made a special catch in the end zone but came down out of bounds. Nice to see the potential though.

Touchdown pass, Davis Mills to Chris Moore. 13 yards. Extra point good.

Texans 7-3, 11:17 remaining 2nd Q.

Mills 10-12 for 87 yds and a TD to start.

Off the hands of Brandin Cooks on third down, incomplete. Cooks is the subject of several trade rumors in spite of signing the recent 2-yr contract extension (thru 2024) that included $36 million guaranteed. Starting to think that where there is smoke on these trade rumors, there's fire. Meaning, Cooks' bud Jack Easterby, was recently fired, so if Cooks can be flipped for a 2nd rounder, so be it.

Fairbairn converts the field goal attempt from 55 yards.

Pierce now 12-64 rushing. Mills 111.8 QBR.

Texans 10-3, 4:57 2nd Q

Raiders convert a fourth down to keep their drive alive in Texans territory.

Carr 26-yd pass to Mack Hollins, touchdown. Looks like he just split the seam in the cover-2. Extra point good.

10-10, 0:25 remaing 2nd Q.

Halftime stats
Mills 11-15, 95 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT
Pierce 12-64 rush, 3-20 receiving
Collins 2-24

Carr 11-14, 111 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT
Jacobs 10-45
Adams 4-46

Texans 14:32 TOP

Mills having his best game of the season. Orchestrates 9-play 67-yd drive to open the second half, taking 4:01 off the clock. Drive highlighted by a 39-yd pass to Akins to move the offense across midfield then a 20-yd pass to Dorsett into the red zone.

Fairbairn connects on 35-yd field goal.

Texans 13-10, 10:59 3rd Q

Raiders RB Jacobs finally stretchin his legs a bit on the ensuing drive. Capped it off with a 6-yd touchdown run, 39 yards total to start the half.

Jacobs now 15-84 with the score. Texans may regret some earlier drives that ended in three field goal attempts (and just two of them converted).

13-17 Raiders, 5:48 3rd Q.

Texans respond.

Big 24-yd reception by Cooks across midfield.

Bobbling 25-yd TD catch by Dorsett in 2-deep coverage for the score. Extra point good.

8-play 74-yd drive in just 2:34 off the clock. We got us a back-and-forth affair.

Texans 20-17, 3:14 3rd Q.

Trying to keep up with the NLCS at the same time... Bryce Harper just hit a go-ahead homer in the Bot8th to put the Phillies up 4-3, trying to close out the series. Not sure what the Padres were saving closer Josh Hader for there... methinks they will have several months starting tonight to think that over.

Jacobs still going. 7-play 76-yd drive capped by a 7-yd touchdown run by Jacobs.

He now has 17 rushes for 103 yards and two TDs.

20-24 Raiders, 13:32 4th Q.

And the Padres inexplicably bunted with one out in the 9th inning. Karma dictates they lose. Phillies to the World Series. Weather delay in New York. Astros may not even get to play tonight.

WR Nico Collins to the locker room with a groin injury, uncertain to return.

Pierce stopped just shy of the first down marker on a 3rd-and short at the Texan own 33-yd line. Raiders timeout.

Texans were going to go for it, but a foul start on rookie OL Kenyon Green changed their minds. First time the team punted today, and it was a good one, 61 yards off Cam Johnston down to the Raiders 19.

20-24 Raiders, 11:21 4th Q

Oof, DT Roy Lopez jumps offsides on a 4th-and-1 to help the Raiders extend a drive that might have been a donut.

Instead, Jacobs takes the ensuring carry 15-yards into the endzone.

Jacobs now up to 143 yards on the ground with three touchdowns.

20-31 Raiders, 7:06 remaining in the game.

PICK SIX ALERT

For the wrong team.

Mills throws into the hands of Duron Harmon, who returns it 74 yards for the score. Credit to Tunsil for giving chase and making a diving tackle attempt 20-yards out.

20-38 Raiders, 3:26 remaining

Collins is not returning. Also, Kenyon Green was in the medical tent but has returned.
Edit, whelp Green is out again with a shoulder injury. Hope it isn't his pec.

Thanks, Keith, for the updates. I got catching up to do.

Well, it looked OK for a while, anyway. I will have to review the quarters I missed.

Raiders winning the 4th qtr 21-0.

What's going on with Tampa Bay? Losing 21-3 to a Carolina team that is having a fire sale?

Mills should pad his stats here. His stats were excellent until the pick 6.....

Phillies are hot right now....

Texans offense sputters out to a turnover on downs. A couple kneeldowns, and that's ballgame.

20-38 Raiders, final.

Mills 28-41, 302 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT
Pierce 20-92, 4-25
Akins 3-68

Carr 21-27, 241 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT
Jacobs 20-143, 3-12, 3 TD
Adams 8-95

Texans 29:17 TOP

Final score:

Raiders 38, Texans 20

----------------------------------------

Well, on the surface, looks like the Texan run defense had problems today. Although, Kirksey had 9 tackles, the DBs were making most of the tackles, i.e. linebackers MIA.
