Default Texans ink Mercilus to 4-year, $54 million extension

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...lion-extension

Can't complain. The guy's been a fine player for most of his contract and the Texans had the cap room to spare after not signing Clowney.

Texans also signed P Anger to a three-year extension.

HOUSTON -- The Texans have signed outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus to a four-year, $54 million contract extension that includes $28.5 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

And there's the only really pertinent number for any NFL contract these days.
28.5 M over four years not too bad.
I wonder if this was the kind of money they were offering JDC before GM O'Brien shipped him off to Seattle for peanuts ? And I wonder what kind of money Clowney actually ends up getting in his upcoming free agency after a couple of prime time spectacular games for the Seahawks but also lots of time being sidelined due to his injuries ?

eh, Re: Mercilus, if nothing else this is a good look to the rest of the league that the Texans are taking care of one of their own. Clowney, KJack, Duane Brown... there's a history here that needs to be re-written. Nice to note that Mercilus is a former first rounder that has now received two extensions from the same team that drafted him.

Mercilus has not fared as well as I had hoped in the wake of J.J. Watt's injury hiatus, so this extension seems like a little bit of an overpay for a player that is likely beginning to enter the twilight of his career next year. But, the NFL is likely going to see a bit of a spike in the salary cap very soon, and my hunch is that what may seem like a slight overpay today won't seem that way at all very soon. Even the average healthy pass rushers are tough to find, and Mercilus is at least that. Well liked, too, from what I've seen.

Oh, Romeo, Romeo. Wherefore art thou, Romeo?

Trying to find a LB that can cover Travis Kelce...
