I tried the Fanspeak board (4/5) and it was Trade-a-Palooza. The Bengals wanted me to trade down to #24, then the Seahawks wanted me to trade down to #26 then the Panthers wanted me to trade down to #30, picking up extra selections along the way which I then used to trade up with the Rams in Round 2 and trade up with the Saints in Round 3. Finally, I traded down one spot in the 3rd with Philadelphia to pocket an extra sixth. In the end, I got everything covered except a DE to replace Crick.

I was surprised to see Spriggs still sitting there at #74. He is going to take time to develop, but he could potentially become a starting LT in the NFL, so I felt there was value here with his athleticism. Bronson Kaufusi is slowly becoming one of my favorite players in this draft. He is older due to his Mission, but I like what I see and if he and Nassib are unavailable, I don't know who to get to fill in for Crick that I will be happy about. Javon Hargrave is a guy who I consistently draft. I selected 2 TEs and am pleased to do so when it's Vannett and Hooper. Von Bell is a guy I've seen projected as a 2nd rounder and I have a hard time buying that. However, if available at #108....I've decided to add him to My Guys. I got Malcolm Mitchell again. Feel really good about adding Kelly, Spriggs, and Glasgow to the OL group. Nick Vigil is going to be a good/solid NFL ILB and I'm preparing for the day when Cushing is no longer a Texan. Keyarris Garrett always shows up on my draft classes. Kevin Hogan came off the board @ #185 and with so many picks from trading down, I decided to get a game manager who lacks size, but makes up for it with intelligence and accuracy. Maybe I watched too many USC games, but I like this kid as a solid back-up who is much cheaper than Hoyer. I wanted a RB and Tre Madden was the guy with size/speed (6'0" 220lbs/7.09-Cone and 4.27-Shuttle) and still on the board (again, I watched some USC games). Tavon Young is only 5' 9 1/8" 183lbs, but I think he could play the slot. He has very good quickness (6.80-Cone and 3.93-Shuttle.

Wow! This was my hardest MOCK Draft to date. I constantly looked at my board and tried to determine who I should take because I had players ranked closely and wondered who might fall to the next round or if I might trade down and still be able to make selections of MY Guys.

Then I struggled to determine who I would take next, luckily I snagged Kaufusi, Garnett, and Collins with my next 3 selections. I needed a TE so moved Higbee up my board over Malcolm Mitchell and luckily was still able to get him later. When I got to pick #125 I contemplated taking Jordan Howard, but since I had Prosise ranked higher, I stuck to my board. All the good S prospects were gone except for TJ Green so I was forced to take him and hoped to get my WR, which I did with the next pick. At #166 I could have gone for another need position, but took Matt Ioannidis anyway because he was the BPA with a 3rd round grade in the 5th round. Lastly, I selected Dadi Nicolas to be a pass-rushing specialist. I highly recommend to anyone to utilize the DraftTek database. It was definitely challenging and close to what I believe will be an actual draft class grade.

Using the Draftek board and only one trade down, I was able to draft a board I'd be thrilled to have although several of these I expect to be selected earlier than where I have them. Realistic? Jared Goff wasn't taken til the second round. That's how realistic this was. Still, we never know how these things unfold.

Kelly will anchor the center position for the next 10 years. Jones is a DT who is flexible enough to be a 3-4 DE. Hooper is the second-best TE according to most boards. Killebrew is a strong safety who hits like a LB. Prosise is not my ideal back but he only has to fit behind Miller and Blue. Norris a good ILB and Garrett a value addition as others here have pointed out. Only eight picks feels rather limiting after getting all these trade-down drafts but I like what this group brings to table. I have my doubts Kelly reaches #52 and I can see all the others being drafted higher than they are here but not outrageously so. |

This is pretty much my max and believe it or not, I did decline a few trade scenarios. I kind of cheated seeing the "BPA" list on the side of the screen so I knew that I could attempt to take a guy later that I have ranked highest. I.E. I drafted Sterling Shepard and Josh Garnett because they were getting close on the list and I was able to wait on my personal BPA at the time Kaufusi. I did the same when I selected Jerrell Adams over Malcolm Mitchell. If I had been smart, I might have attempted to trade back up for players like Maliek Collins (#79) and Nick Vannett (#94). Correa was my BPA at #122. I took Haeg to complete my O-Line of Kelly, Garnett, and Haeg. I love Promise as my 3rd down back and because I had so many picks I took a flyer on Jonathan Williams. I always seem to take Keyarris and Hogan was my backup QB selection. Having extra picks I selected a pass-rush specialist in Dadi Nicolas. I have a H-Back in Dan Vitale. Then just to have a QB on the practice squad I grabbed Kessler.

Bummed I couldn't come away with at least one TE and I would need to trade down and get an extra pick to find one for the roster.

4/12 CBS board:
A bit strange. With the big trade, I sense the OTs may drop a little bit which might allow Conklin or Decker to fall to us. The question will be whether now is the time to upgrade the OT position and prepare for Duane Brown to be next spring's big cap casualty. With some of the other options (Ragland, Elliott, Lynch, Reed), I'm becoming bigger on taking the good LTs while you can. I traded down in the second for a lower 2nd and a 3rd then traded the lower 2nd for a 3rd and a 5th. Roy, I could be happy with this except I don't see a need for two TEs in this draft. Select a decent RB at 4/25 like a Kenyan Drake or Paul Perkins who can be your third-down option. Then you can use that 6th rounder on a CB or S to add depth there.

I would have taken Tyvus Powell, except I figured Jerell Adams would be more impactful on the roster. The Patriots looked good with Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez on the field together. I also felt like I need at least one of them to pan out and I double my chances in case one of them is a bust.

I think CJ is salvageable so he can be paired with Hooper or Higbee or whomever. Hey, we do so many of these mocks that we don't explain some of our thinking. In general, I just take one player per position based on the severity of need and the scarcity of good options. Sometimes, what you want just isn't there and it changes the equation.
In general, my draft plan falls this way: 1) Best LT or DE/DT that could fit our scheme. 2) Ryan Kelly or Nick Martin for center. 3) One of a few top guards, particularly if the centers aren't there. 4) A TE that creates mismatches due to height or speed. 5) Increasing depth at RB and/or WR. 6) A strong safety that tackles well. 7) Better depth at ILB. 8) A second D-lineman. But the exact order is fluid based on which positions are disappearing. Sometimes I pick a player in the 3rd because he's the one good guy at that position then take a guy in the 4th I really think is a better player but there were alternative options if he fell off the board. All I know for sure is that the Texans will prioritize entirely differently than I would. |
