Bad luck? Our STs were consistently one of the worst in the league with him coaching.

okay, just for discussion, are you referring to our kicker, our punter, our kick returns or our punt returns, or our kick coverage, or punt coverage, points scored against us, points scored by us, starting line of scrimmage on kicks , turnovers created or given, ??? is it better now? by how much?

Found this where you can choose ST ranking by year. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamst2010

I didn't look up all of them but since 2010 Texans ST rank was 7, 23, 13, 32, 29. where 29 was this 2014 year I believe.

Then Rick Gosselin of Dallas Morning news ranks special teams annually on 22 different criteria, for 2014 Texans were 15th on his list.
http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/dal...s-rankings.ece

Looks like Gosslin had Texans 23rd in 2010 so quite a variation in two different ranking systems.

and in 2009, Texans were 22nd according to Gosselin. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/dal...-find-9768.ece
and Outsiders had Texans ranked 17th.

Then Bleacher report had Texans special teams ranked 30th coming into the 2014 season as expectation based on 2013 in their view
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...t-draft/page/4

So, that seems to say not consistently near the bottom, overall ST, depending what look at.

Then there are lots of special team categories ranked at this site http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stats/

We aren't ranked near the top where we would like to be, agree with that .

Wow, you put a lot more work into this than what was necessary. I was mostly going by eyeball. You know, when your return teams regularly run out kickoffs deep in the endzone and can't get it out beyond the 10-15 yard line (rather than just taking a knee)... And it happens over-and-over-and-over again during the HC/ST coaches tenure and not one of them apparently tells the return guy to just take a freaking knee... Or when you're return guy catches a KO at the sideline and falls out of bounds at the 2... Or when your coverage team regularly lets the opponents get good field position and your return team does not... Things like that. Other than Fat Randy's shanks from time to time we haven't been too bad at actually kicking the ball (at least from my eye's perspective) so I'm not really referring to that aspect of STs. Maybe it was not all on Marciano, but all those issues reared up when he was in charge of that unit. Time will tell if we see improvement under BOB's group. Even with that, the rankings you listed above indicate the Texans were ranked at slightly-above-average to below average 4 out of 5 years. Well below average for at least 2, if not 3, of those years. 4 out of 5 years of average to below average shows fairly consistent rate of suck.

I can't say I've ever been really impressed with our kick coverage teams, ever. I've been okay with our punters/kickers in general. But the returners always looked like they'd never been taught what to do back there except just grab the ball, run sideways and fall down.

I agree with the eyeball observations.
