Default New Draft Plan

If the rumors are true and the Texans are able to sign free agent defensive end Mike Montgomery, whose last gig was with the Green Bay Packers, how will this impact their draft strategy. I think they will not think about drafting a d-end untill late in the draft. If this move doesn't happen I see them taking an end some where in the first three rounds. If they are able to sign him this will give them the oppertunity to take best player available in most rounds. They still need a starting outside linebacker or maybe two, a backup running back, a run stuffing d-tackle, and interior offesinve line depth. I could see their draft filling out like this depending on who is there when they pick.

1) Clay Matthews or Clint Stintim
2) Alex Mack or Marcus Freeman
3) Eric Wood or Ron Brace
4) Rashard Jennings or Andre Brown
4) Darryl Richard or Terrance Taylor
5) Pass rush specialist
6) Developmental QB
7) Special teams, punt returner or punter

Don't know if any of you guys check out walterfootball.com, but it's a pretty good cite. One of their 4 round mock drafts is here, and it is envisioning a similar draft -

http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2009.php

In this one, we come away with -

1st round - OLB Clay Matthews
2nd round - C Max Unger
3rd round - S Rashad Johnson
4th round - RB Andre Brown and DT Terrance Taylor

While I'm not as draft savvy as some around here, at first blush, I think I like the looks of this draft.

Yeah, I am not so sure about the Max Unger pick, other than that I think our draft would look something like that.

Unger would be a steal at #46 IMO, he can play 4 positions on the OL and appears to be an upgrade at 2 of the OL positions we have playing right now. The only pick I question and it's only a small question is Taylor, other wise that would be a sweet draft for the Texans.

I actually like the idea of taking a versatile young center to groom. While Myers is OK, I think he's liability in short yardage situations and one of the reasons we struggled on several of those 3rd/4th and shorts. I don't think I've ever seen a team struggle so much on the QB sneak as the Texans did last year.

Using my board, I came away with -
1st round - LB Clay Matthews
2nd round - RB Donald Brown
3rd round - DT Sen'Derrick Marks
4th round - TE Shawn Nelson and WR Mike Thomas

That's not necessarily the positions that I want to come out of the draft with, however, I give Matthews and Brown a 1st round grade. Marks has a 2nd round grade and both of my picks in the 4th round, I have with 3 round grades. Therefore, I'm very pleased with my BPA position. Just for the record, I had Andre Brown at the top of my draft board when I selected Nelson, but since I had already drafted Brown in the 2nd round, it seemed too early to select another RB.

Just pure speculation on my part, but in the 5th and 6th I'd expect to have an opportunity to draft
S David Bruton
C A.Q. Shipley

Roy: I like Shipley also. They said he was a good Center, but that was his only position. Well, he is also a long snapper IIRC, so that means for us he would be a two position guy since we had Pittman as a dedicated LS last year.

And, What do you think about Myron Pryor for DT. At the combine his measurables were as good as Raji's. Commentators said the offensive linemen in the SEC said he was one of the hardest DT's in the conf. to handle. He is short and big (6' 330 lbs). Just curious about your take.

I also liked D-Hog and thought he had a future as our C at one time. So, I may not be the guy to go to on late-round OC possibilities. I'm not a fan of Kasey Studdard and think Shipley could replace him as a back up with the possibility of suplanting Myers eventually.

As for Pryor, I like him. He's on my draft board as a potential 7th round pick. I saw him in his all-star game and he holds the point of attack pretty well as a NT. Last year I was somewhat dissapointed that Frank Okam didn't get much action, so I would not be reluctant to find him some competition. If nothing else, he's another body we can rotate on the DL to keep our horses fresh.
