Default ESPN: The Texans are prime trade down candidates

Premium content but I will summarize: (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft...odd&id=4035825)

ESPN says that Texans are in one of the best positions to trade down with SD behind us in need of tackle help, and likely only one top tier tackle left on the board. Likeliest candidate would be Philly, with the proper ammunition (two first rounders give them the ability to trade thier second) and a serious tackle need.

I would agree with most of the assessment but I am not sure an OT will be available at 15. Philly would be coming up from either 21 or 28, which according to the trade chart would net either a 3, 4, and 6th, or a 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. You might still be able to get Matthews at 21 if that is your choice.

Did Rick Smith take full value last draft in the Baltimore trade? He might take less than full chart value again if he thinks the Texans can get the guy they want and an extra pick or two and be happy.

OTs tend to go earlier than most experts think. They are simply a limited talent pool so I wouldn't wait around for an OT if that's what a team wants. Remember the Texans traded down last year and were more-or-less forced to take Duane Brown who turned out okay but was quite a risk. I'm not sure they would have made that trade if they had known what they were getting themselves into. It turned out alright but they sure walked a tightrope to get there.

Yup, that was kind of a funny time. Kubes was so nervous he couldn't even be in the room IIRC and McNair asked Smith 2 or 3 times if they did the right thing. I suspect that Smith has more than a little riverboat gambler in him and seems to be able to read the table pretty well.
