Anonymous college coach quotes on Stingley from Bruce Feldman of the Athletic:
“The kid is uber talented. He’s long as shit. He wasn’t physical but there’s no question he’s talented. He’s an impressive athlete. I think he moves better than the other (top) cornerbacks. I’ve heard he’s a good kid.” “I thought he was a finesse corner. He wasn’t violent at the line of scrimmage, but he has great feet and is a real technician, and his ball skills really set him apart. But you wonder: Is the drive or fire there? He had that great freshman year. I don’t know what’s happened the past two years. He’s got the ability to be really good. I just wonder if he’s built for it. It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets to the league and he does really well. But if he gets a second contract, is he gonna be the same player?” “He’s got those long arms that pretty much touch the grass in his stance. I think he’s smoother than a sudden guy. Plays the ball in the air very well. I think he got a little bored at times. When the ball isn’t going his way, his technique gets away from him. He did fall off a little bit; maybe that was new scheme, new defense.” “He’s almost like a wide receiver playing DB. His ball skills and the way he made plays on the ball are rare. It’s one thing for a defensive back to get in position, but his body control and the adjustments he could make in mid-air, this dude is different. He looked like a seasoned vet as a true freshman.” |

Lot of us are old guys in here, might remember his grandfather, Patriots WR Darryl Stingley. The senior Stingley passed away in 2007 and was unfortunately best known for being paralyzed in 1978 during a preseason game hit from Jack Tatum.
If I had to guess, the selection of Stingley was an indication that the team was going to be unsuccessful moving up from #13 and took their guy with the best pick they had. Lovie needs his CBs to make his defense work. The team previously signed Steven Nelson, so we will see a new secondary this fall. Some depth at the position, too, with Desmond King and Lonnie Johnson returning. |

Lions just made a huge trade up to #12 and potentially snipe WR Jameson Williams. The Texans response? A trade back from #13 to the Eagles. Getting picks 15, 124, 162, & 166 in return. Lots of ammo for later tonight and/or tomorrow?

“He was a pretty good tackle, but he’s an outstanding guard. I don’t think his feet are good enough to play tackle at a high level, but he’s powerful, is very good with his hands and is a road-grader in the run game. He was their most consistent guy up front.”
“He looked better on film than he did in our game. He understands angles and leverage well. Playing tackle, he’s not used to that much space. I thought he was more of a Day 2 guy.” “He was really special in 2020. They had a better line then, and sometimes it’s about who’s playing next to you. He has very good awareness — seeing twists, recognizing pre-snap movement, seeing it when it’s coming. His cleats are always in the dirt. I think he’s elite. He reminds me of (Bills Pro Bowler) Dion Dawkins.” |

So, to recap, the Texans got a guy whose performance after his first collegiate season “fell off a cliff” and another guy who is considered a “second day pick.”
That sounds about right. Can’t wait to see how many practice steps each of these guys takes once Quasimodo slaps a fitbit on them. |

Remaining picks after Day 1:
Round 2 (37) Round 3 (68) Round 3 (80) Round 4 (107) Round 4 (108) Round 4 (124) Round 5 (162) Round 5 (166) Round 5 (170) Round 6 (205) Round 6 (207) Imo, there is no way the Texans make all these selections. They either bundle some Day 3 picks to move up in either/both the 2nd & 3rd rounds or they kick some picks to 2023 (where, granted, they already have a lot of picks next year, too). |

Texans select Baylor SS Jalen Pitre from Baylor... kinda love this pick.
Though it seems possible the Jets sniped them by trading up to 36 to select RB Breece Hall. Kinda glad they did if that's the case. RBs can be had later, and the Texans have plenty of ammo to move up for the one they want. Pitre ought to be player. Big secondary upgrade. |

Seven remaining picks:
Round 3 (80) Round 4 (107) Round 5 (162) Round 5 (166) Round 5 (170) Round 6 (205) Round 6 (207) Cost them a pair of 4ths to move up 24 picks from the 3rd to the 2nd round. Glad they bundled... might've been nice to pair a 5th with that 4th though. chuck will love this... Metchie is recovering from a torn ACL in the SEC championship game in December, and it is uncertain he will be healed in time for training camp, but things sounds optimistic with his recovery thus far. |
