The Texans have clearly botched this from the get-go, but the idea that it was in response to a discrimination claim makes no sense.

If the Texans were worried about this, they would have just settled with the guy. The guy's attorney even says they came to the Texans with a severance proposal which the Texans rejected. I can't imagine his severance proposal was more expensive than the remaining 3 years on Gaine's contract. And firing Gaine only gave them ammo to go public. If they truly believed there was something there, immediately firing Gaine is the last thing you would do.
