Default Fred Weary signs one-year deal [Chron.com]

Good news. Fred will be back and fully healthy in time for camp.

Quote:
Weary's one-year deal, which he's expected to sign Wednesday, has a base salary of $800,000. It includes a $300,000 bonus when he reports to training camp. He can make as much as $400,000 for games played next season.

Good to hear. I think, if he's healthy, he's still the odds-on-favorite to win the RG spot again. At the very least, he's solid veteran depth with starting experience for us.

Fred should have a great year under Gibbs and get a decent contract finally.

I would have rather moved on. We ran the ball just as well after Weary was out and we now have a lot of young OL who either need to have room on the roster or they'll get cut. Weary is getting a little old now and while he is better than he was under the old regime, I don't see him having any upside beyond what he has already shown.

Depth is nice but we probably can't keep more than 10-11 linemen between the roster and the practice squad. This just makes it harder for someone like Spencer or Frye to make the team.

At least they signed him to a more cap-friendly figure than the old contract.

I definitely like it. We need depth on that line, man. Doesn't matter if it's Weary or someone else. We have to plan cuz we're pretty much cursed with line failure and injury.

Doesn't he have some experience at center, if only way back in college ?

I didn't think his previous cap hit was "unfriendly"...he wasn't one of the better paid players but he was probably the best lineman on the team two years ago and last year he had all kinds of issues but wasn't playing poorly and is a good athlete for a 300 pounder (Weary is 308).

My guess is Weary didn't have many options outside of Houston, and they will give him a shot. I would prefer to have the young lineman over Weary, but if he earns his spot, he earns his spot. I don't think Kubiak would keep him over some of the younger guys if he didn't earn it.
