Weddle would be a good complement to Quinn at safety. But what about that experienced CB we need? Has Aso made up his mind yet?

Weddle is supposed to be the top FA Safety, or top 3, so that would be nice to see in Houston.
Here is a good review of FA CB and Safety available for now. http://www.footballsfuture.com/2011/fa/db.html I was just looking at interception stats at http://www.footballdb.com/stats.html...0&lg=NFL&conf= Surprizingly found near the top Jason Allen with total of 6 last year. |

Try $8MM.....
Agree, he's good, but that is crazy for a S with short hair ![]() @sdutChargers: Weddle gets $40 mil for 5 years. $19 guaranteed.

Apparently, we made a pretty decent efforts at this guy.... If you can't beat'em, make'em spend more than they wanted to
![]() No one will ever know if it is fact or fiction, but I saw this via PFT: https://www.signonsandiego.com/news/...-back-burnett/ The Chargers have essentially spent $49 million on their defense in the past 24 hours -- $40 million to safety Eric Weddle (five years, $19 million guaranteed) and $9 million (three years, $3 million guaranteed) to linebacker Takeo Spikes. There probably is not enough left for Kevin Burnett, according to those familiar with the Chargers attempt to balance their needs with their wants. Those sources said Monday night that the inside linebacker who had a career year in 2010 was going to have to come down on his asking price to be in play for the Chargers. Separate sources said previously that price was more than $5 million a year. By Tuesday morning, after the Chargers had extended their budget slightly to make sure they got Weddle from the clutches of the Houston Texans, it had become virtually certain that Burnett will be playing elsewhere this season.

Good for the Texans, Weddle is good but not $8MM a year good. It would have been nice to sign him, and a decent corner, but now we can after Aso. Not sure that Aso is not playing the same game.

Seems like we made a solid run at him with a bunch of cash. Like him, but pretty glad SD got him with that kind of price tag.

While I agree in principle, I also think if you're waiting for one of the top free agent safeties, corners, or whatever other position you need, to sign with you for reasonable terms, you'll never sign anybody. The fact of the matter is you have to overpay in free agency, particularly if you're a team who is not considered a contender and you're chasing one of the top tier free agents. Thus, the ideal situation is to not have to rely on free agency. The Texans don't have this luxury. They're going to have to overpay. Not saying Weddle was the guy to overpay, but virtually every free agent signing, when viewed in isolation, generally looks like the team overpaid. The only problem is, while waiting around for some top notch free agent to suddenly and inexplicably become "reasonable," everyone may be signed with other teams. I don't want the Texans waiting around for something that is not realistically going to happen and then ending up with either nothing or low end JAGs.

Interesting article here on Weddle's agent during the time when the Texans were pursuing his client.
