Look what fell out of the sky!!
Here's why you mock. Sometimes, the unexpected happens and you have to ask yourself "what will I do?". I used the Fanspeak board but, at 22, I was given several appealing choices:
Conklin, a legit LT to plug in when Brown gets injured or needs to be cut.
Ragland, the ILB who can be like Patrick Willis and would allow you to drop Cushing's contract after next year.
Kelly, the OC I have wanted all along and...
Carson Wentz!! - one of the top 2 QBs in the draft!
Ok, so we have Osweiler now and this would create controversy but we may never get a chance to draft a QB like this again. You gotta take him, right?
Well, I tried to trade down with Denver - no dice. Tried to trade down with the 49ers - not interested. Cleveland had taken Goff. Philly had no 2nds. The Jets would have been falling too far.
So after giving it much thought I went with value. I took Wentz. Fortunately, Kelly was still there in the second but I had to alter my draft because I did not have the trade chips I wanted to add more picks. I swapped my third with Baltimore for a pair of fourths and liked overall, what I had done:
22: R1P22 QB CARSON WENTZ NORTH DAKOTA STATE
52: R2P21 C RYAN KELLY ALABAMA
104: R4P6 TE TYLER HIGBEE WESTERN KENTUCKY
119: R4P21 RB PAUL PERKINS UCLA
130: R4P32 CB CYRUS JONES ALABAMA
159: R5P20 S MILES KILLEBREW SOUTHERN UTAH
166: R5P27 DT ANTWAUN WOODS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
195: R6P20 G CONNOR MCGOVERN MISSOURI
TRADE PARTNER:
BALTIMORE RAVENS
SENT:
ROUND: 3 PICK: 22
RECEIVED:
ROUND: 4 PICK: 6
ROUND: 4 PICK: 32
We'll have to shop for DE, WR and ILB among the UDFAs. Somehow, I don't think Rick Smith will face this dilemma.
