Well, it is quite the undertaking to project who will be considered as top draft picks in next years draft this early. Also, since we don't know which underclassmen will be declaring, that makes this even more difficult. Then there is trying to determine team needs and any coaching changes. Therefore, I'm just going to give you my preliminary My Guys draft board. I'll let the college season play out before getting too serious about this. This includes underclassmen that I expect will be coming out in this draft.

Next years draft is STOCKED with big time safeties: Carter, Mccray, Jones, Chancelor Berry, Mays just to name a few...excited already!!

Jeeeeezzz! I would like to wait til TC at least, so we can start to see where the needs are going to be. You know with the improvement in the LB's, we may get better play out of our existing safeties. And with our winning record this year (it says here), we won't be in any position to draft any of the really big time safeties.

Walters has dated May 24th. sorry if this one is already mentioned, but I am bored.

Not sure I would complain right now about this group. FS is a position us blogger's think the team needs to upgrade, adding another SEC O' lineman is never a bad idea, and a 322 lbs NT appears on paper to be a big need.

Let's try to find a RG, RB, NT, WLB, CB, FS, and SS and I will be happy. It is way too early to try to figure out who will be available in which round.

Distilling that down, I would be happy with a NT and a couple of safeties, the rest would be icing on the cake, at least right now anyway.

I just hope that Weatherspoon is still on the board when we pick. Taylor Mays is a top 5 guy like Sean Taylor.

what about the other safety I've heard a lot about Berry? at Tennessee?

IMO worth a trade up. I think he is better than Mays, more physical. Monte Kiffen is raving about him as one of the best ever. Should be a top 10 pick, and worth it.

I think it was LZ who said he likes him better than Mays too. I've made myself a mental note to watch a few Tenn. games this year.

Thats like compairing Ed Reed to John Lynch or Steve Atwater. At 5'11" and 195 Berry is more in the mold of an NFL FS. Mays on the other hand is built like a LB that is atletic enough to play S. I think he will be utilized as a SS in the NFL if he doesnt outgrow the position before next year. There is the possibility he could be moved to LB or rush DE before all is said and done. Think Im crazy read this.

Mays' workout numbers are ridiculous. He's 6-3, 226 pounds, with 6 percent body fat and ran an electronically timed 40 this spring in 4.32 seconds. He did 26 reps with 225 pounds while also vertical jumping 41 inches and doing a standing broad jump of 11-4. (As evidence in his growth, Mays arrived at USC weighing 215 and posted a vertical jump of 35 inches and a broad jump of 10-0.)

Asked if he's even seen anything that big, move that fast, USC strength coach Chris Carlisle paused for a few moments: "Maybe when I walked by the cheetah cage at the wildlife park." Mays' athleticism actually presents USC with a different kind of issue: a talent with such growth potential that you have to guard against him outgrowing the position. "Our big thing is he could get too big too fast," says Carlisle, who also gushes about the player's work ethic. "He could easily be like his daddy [former NFL defensive lineman Stafford Mays] so we have to make him better without making him bigger because he could be like 260 in a month."


Utilized the right way in the right system both of these guys should be very good pros. I dont think you can go wrong with either one. I know if the texans were lucky enough to get either one of these guys I will be ecstatic. RIGHT NOW either one is better than ANYONE the Texans have ever trotted out at either Safety position.

As for my comparison of Berry to Mays, I only said Berry appears to me to play more physical than Mays. Yes Mays has measurable that blow your mind, but in last years games I watched he did not fly off the tape. Granted that whole defense had so much talent last year. I have not yet had a chance to watch him play this year. As of last year, I had Mays as playing below his talent level.

In fact I have seen some reports that a few teams believe Mays will be a LB in the NFL.

How about Mays at WLB with Berry at FS? Of course we probably wouldn't have any draft picks for three years after that to pull it off....

I guess need to see how they produce this year, but looks like a pretty deep safety draft next year, so maybe we will pick up one or two in top few rounds.

That is a pretty good list. It's missing Butler from Georgia Tech, a top 5 safety on most peoples list.
