[McClain] Eugene Wilson Re-signed

To a 3 year deal according to McClain.

The Texans released defensive end Anthony Weaver, offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam and safety Will Demps today. They also reached an agreement on a three-year contract with starting free safety Eugene Wilson.

Very, very important signing.

I'm anxious to see the details of the contract.

so far so good with the offseason moves! other than leading Robinson on but that mistake is minute

jppaul 02-25-2009 05:50 PM

Well done.

I'm very glad to see this. I think this just about puts the nail in the coffin to the idea that we would use a first day pick for a free safety. We chose instead to go with a servicable FS at what I'm assuming is a reasonable price.

Eugene Wilson is the best safety we have ever suited up. Faint praise, but he has a nose for the ball. If the $ is not crazy (and it should not be) then this is a good signing for us.

I concur, good move, he really seemed to help settle down our defense and make plays like we hadn't seen in safeties for a while.

Additional contract info for Eugene Wilson:

I just got off the phone with a source close to the situation who has informed me that the Houston Texans have just re-signed free agent free safety Eugene Wilson to a 3 year contract worth $11.2 million with $3.85 million guaranteed.

Schef says $11.3 million. I don't understand the media's infatuation with rounding on the internet. There's plenty of room on the page. Give me ALL OF THE FREAKING DIGITS!!!

ok, rant over. For now.

of course... I did just shorten Schefter to "Schef", so who am I to criticize.

$3.85 million guaranteed ? That sounds very reasonable & very responsible to me. Good work Mr. Smith !
So this is our starting FS with 2nd year safety Barber to be our starting SS, right ? And with D-Rob tagged for this fall, DBackfield would now seem to be below LB and DLine of the priority hierarchy for Defense ?

And since this is a below average draft for DBs, well ok CBs, safeties are average, it a good thing. Hope we grab some Lbs to get this group to an elite level, you do not win in the playoff with out a stud front 7.

Okay, have a problem with Wilson's contract. Reports above indicate a $3.85 million guarantee on a total contract worth either $11.2 or $11.3 million.

Here are Wilson's base salaries for the next three seasons:
2009 - $1.85 million
2010 - $2.705 million
2011 - $3.56 million

That gives us a total for the base salaries of $8.115 million.

Simply adding the $3.85 million as a straight option bonus would give the contract a total value of $11.965 million, too much.

What to do? Hmm. Salaries are often guaranteed if option bonuses aren't exercised, but that probably isn't the case here. If you make the signing bonus $2 million and have the first year base guaranteed, then you get to the $3.85 million, but then the total contract value drops to $10.115 million, too low.
