Texans Trade for Raiders CB Gareon Conley

Texans gave up the 3rd rounder acquired from the Seahawks for Jadeveon Clowney to obtain CB Gareon Conley. Shores up a position suffering from injuries. Interesting move considering the Raiders are coming to town soon, too.

Kind of weird for a few reasons, not least of which is that the Raiders were supposed to be buyers.

The skinny on Conley:

Quote:

Meanwhile, Conley arrived in Oakland under a dark cloud. Seen as a potential Top 10 pick out of Ohio State, Conley fell to the Raiders at No. 24 overall after he was accused of sexual assault the week of that draft. Three months later, though, a grand jury declined to charge him following a police investigation.

Cleared, Conley had a tough time getting on the field as a rookie. A shin injury he later said was a broken tibia limited him to just two games. Healthy in 2018, he tied for the team lead with three interceptions in 15 games.

Yet trading Conley really has little to do with what Conley did (he had one pick and two passes defensed in six games this season; four INTs, 18 passes defensed and 67 tackles in 23 career games), or didn't do (his not sticking his head in on a few tackles in Sunday's 42-24 loss at the Green Bay Packers had to be a bad look on film). Plus, the Raiders do not have to deal with Conley's upcoming fifth-year contract option.

Sounds like a steep price for his resume.

I love it that we're waiting an entire year to pay some Patriot flunky to be our next GM and when he finally signs, he won't have a single frickin' draft pick to use. Genius!

Word is all Conley knew at OSU in college was man but Oakland put him in zone coverage so he's a man guy who should be more comfortable here as RC runs primarily man coverage.
And Chucky wanted his own guys in Oakland. This guy started quite a few games over two years in Oakland.
We are really hurting at cornerback with Roby out for several more weeks and J-Joe also injured.
He's inexpensive and still under contract with like three years left. It dosen't look like a bad deal. We will see soon enough because as thin as we are now at corner look for him to play immediately against his X-team this Sunday.

I believe Caserio's contract with the Patriots runs until after the 2020 draft, so his first draft in Houston wouldn't be until 2021. But at this rate, your scenario could definitely still play out then...

I'm okay with the trade, but I can't help but think about the big draft press conference where the top pick is flown in and is presented with the jersey while the team gushes with optimism -- for a 4th rounder. I know that they're projected to get a 3rd round compensatory pick, but still.
