Chris Brown

so uh....pretty much as advertised right? he's about half a running back.

back spasms now? really, i've never seen him play all that much but is he worth it? i don't want some guy who can't even practice, i'd much rather see walker getting a shot or taylor. i heard mike bell was circling the waters too...

jaimeg 07-30-2008 08:59 AM

Makes it easier to cut him.

You can't rely on someone who is always hurt, we been through that our entire franchise.

It is refreshing to read of that he is basically the only one (w/ Petey) and he are the only injured, while other teams are not as lucky.

Mike 07-30-2008 09:31 AM

He was/is an insurance policy for Ahman. Hopefully Ahman stays healthy and Chris Brown is not needed.

Then We will go with Green, Slayton, Walker, Taylor and Leach. Cook barring injury will get cut. Taylor will be the hybrid TB/FB special teamer who gives flexability to do multiple things on gameday.

I think Kubes has learned over the past couple of years how to back off during camp and give the guys some rest, and the guys know how to get the work in and off the field. Maturation by everyone.

RB Green/Slaton/Walker FB Leach/Taylor

this sounds alright. i think slaton and walker are a little bit too much alike as the smallish, speedy, 3rd down type runners. everything about ch-brown is nice except his health issues and since his inability to be healthy/reputation of the same is standing in the way of any progress i have to wonder how long of a leash kubiak and smith let him have. i'm already catching a hint of displeasure in interviews when ch-brown gets mentioned. if this is the way it shakes out i have to believe taylor has a better shot of getting (and probably staying) on the field. if brown isn't cut and walker gets the axe in the numbers game we just have to hope for healthy runners or we'll get this scenario anyway.

cadams 07-30-2008 01:05 PM

i would be happy with a green/taylor/slayton/walker backfield. walker would probably see very limited action, but he would be good insurance if green goes down.

coloradodude 07-30-2008 01:15 PM

If I were a head coach I would have four RB's. I figure they're only good for about 4 games a piece before they get hurt. That's a tough position. Those guys are always gonna be banged up and of you get one to take you thru the season, well great! Then you've got fresh legs if you need them.

Back spasms are easy to fix thru massage techniques. So this isn't the real problem with Brown. Probably something else or they're letting him miss most of training camp because he's got it.

i didn't want to say anything because judging other people's pain is silly....but....you're right, back spasms sounds a little bit meager in the grand scheme of injuries. he already knows the system so i'm sure he isn't missing the finer points or anything but i gotta believe not being at a practice gets you noticed in the wrong way.

I think your oversimplifying things a bit here. Teams are often selective with what they release publicly. So, it may be much worse than is being said.

I don't think you can say that back spasms are easy to fix....a lot of it has to do with what is the underlying cause of the back spasm in the first place. Massage might treat the symptoms, but not the cause.

Giving Brown's history, he's not going to get the benefit of the doubt here, and I'm just assuming he's either just fragile or a big wuss.

One of todays Quotes from Kubiak

Quote:

(on RB Chris Brown) “Well, I mean, naturally I want him out here playing and competing and getting ready to go with this team. It’s just something we’ve got to deal with. I think a lot of Chris as a player and a person. It’s just unfortunate that this has happened, but we’re going to do everything we can to get him right. It would be easy to sit here and say, ‘I hope he’s out here tomorrow.’ But we’re probably looking at a few days if this injection goes good. Am I disappointed he’s not on the field? Yes. I’m not disappointed in Chris. I just know he can help this team. We got to make sure we get him right.”
An injection for back spasms? Im no med guy, but an injection and 5+ days of rest, especially for a professional athlete whos body should be pretty well oiled. Seems a bit over the top to me.

KJ3 07-30-2008 03:07 PM

absolutely kravix- must be one hell of a back spasm. maybe he just juked some linebackers or something and the medical staff thought he was hurt?

no wait, i get it....they are injecting him strategically with cement, like an under-the-skin armor suit....that's why it takes 5 days, you have to let it dry...

barrett 07-30-2008 05:47 PM

This will not be decided on running ability alone (what we have seen so far in camp). Brown won't be gone unless it looks like the young backs (taylor, slaton, walker) can do all the other things (pass block, catch the ball, etc). I think the first week of camp is a little early to write a veteran off.

For Walker/Taylor it may come down to who is the more valuable special teams guy. All of this is still likely weeks away when the game situations start.

Arky 07-30-2008 06:00 PM

T-Mac had back spasms - apparently they can be cause a lot of discomfort. I think there's some doctor (in Waco?) who he went to see that helped him a bunch....

There's not a doubt in my mind that Brown is a better option than either Taylor or Walker right now. If he gets cut it will be becuase he can't stay on the field. Between Dominic Davis and Ahman Green I don't think this team is going to be vary patient with chronically injured RB's.

As a person who suffers from recurring back spasm issues, I can testify that when they are bad your not walking real well much less running. I have some ligament damage around L3,L4 & L5 and because they are loose every once in a while the muscles just spaz out. That they are giving him a shot doesn't bode well in my mind. If there are underly issues like I have he will not hold up.

Bigtinylittle 07-30-2008 09:13 PM

I agree that back spasms can be pretty bad sometimes. I had an episode a few years ago after a fall. I had spasms so bad that not only could I not walk, I couldn't even stand up. I had to lie down in the back seat of my car just to be able to see the doctor.

He gave me muscle relaxers and a few days later I felt pretty good. A month later it was like it had never happened. So I wouldn't be surprised if Brown is good to go in a few days.

Yup, if it is a single incident type thing he should be right as rain after a relaxant and some rest unless there are some underlying issues.

Everybody was dead on with their comments. My comment was based on the back spasm comment being the actual truth. Now if Brown has a herniated disc or a bulging disc, then retirement is coming because the position of RB is way too physical.

I've had back surgery (microdisectomy) and came out of it a new man but before? Ouch. I couldn't use my left leg and walked like I was 89 yrs old. The doc came in with my MRI and said, "this is impressive." My sciatica was three times the normal size and the disc had broken off in the spinal canal...

Injections and 5 days rest says disc issues...thanks for the memories Mr Brown.

I had them so bad one time that for a week I laid on the floor and had to crawl to the bathroom as I couldn't standup and walk. Wasn't a fun time.

kravix 07-31-2008 11:42 AM

Thanks for clarifying that guys. I didnt know they could be like that. I think it proves my point though. It is unlikely that this is something like a simple spasm not caused by serious spinal cord injuries and possibly much more serious.
