Charles Spencer waived.. [Claimed by Panthers, Later waived again]

Appears he wasn't ready for camp or the 80 men we take to camp. Kind of a sad story and I wish him well.

Mike 07-22-2008 05:02 PM

Not a surprise. It is a sad story that fat "Ronnie" had to run into the back of his leg. ARRRGGGGGHHHHHH.

papabear 07-22-2008 05:06 PM

A casuality of the 80 man limit. I hate that after all his hard work he never got the chance to at least give it a real shot here in Houston. For his sake I hope he gets a chance somewhere else. For my sake I hope he doesn't. I would hate to have to watch him play for someone else.

kravix 07-22-2008 05:27 PM

It too bad, but I had basically come to the realization that he want going to make the cut anyway.

I wish him well.

nero THE zero 07-22-2008 05:34 PM

Not suprising at all. Glad to see the situation finally resolved and now both parties can move forward.

painekiller 07-22-2008 05:46 PM

I can see him trying to play for a powerblocking team like Pittsburg or SD.

If he can get himself back to a practice level than he has a shot at a different type of scheme.

BTW Thank you for your effort Mr. Spencer and remember one door closes so another can open.

TheMatrix31 07-22-2008 06:21 PM

**sigh**

How disappointing.

Dave 07-23-2008 07:36 AM

Very, very, very disappointing, but I don't know why I'm surprised as this was all but a certainty when he missed all the OTA's.

KJ3 07-23-2008 08:06 AM

well....we all knew it was coming....

still, i do feel that sinking feeling of disappointment. maybe he'll catch on somewhere?

i know there are compensatory picks for the number of free agents that you let go (or something like that), so are there any picks for losing a mid-round pick to injury?

Dancerdog 07-23-2008 08:45 AM

I had hoped Charles could come back from his horrendous injury, but it was not to be. I suppose he could catch on with another team after some more work. Who knows? What I do know that I always pulled for him to make it back and I wish him all the best. We'll miss ya Big Nasty.

IT makes it worse hearing comments like these from Pitts:

But for it to happen to a guy, who was very easily expected to have a 10-year career and go to Pro Bowls at least half those years. For it to happen to him, you'd expect him to be more down in the dumps. But he just stayed positive through it all.

and this:

“I’m the only person who has ever played next to him, so I know what it was like out there with him, just his intensity and his attitude he brought to the game. There aren’t a lot of guys I can share that with out there. Granted, I’ve had a lot of fun playing with my good buddy Ephraim (Salaam). But Spence had something special about him, something innate. You can’t teach what he had in him.”

I really wanted to see a healthy Spencer in a Texans uniform.

KJ3 07-23-2008 11:02 AM

jeez, chester with the crotch-shot of a comment.....

kravix 07-23-2008 02:33 PM

After a bit more thought on this I came up with some speculation.

The biggest thing that Kubiak has been on about all off season in the 80 man roster limit. He has even modified the entire way that the team is approching TC and two a days because of it.

It appears that Spencer isnt fully recovered. His leg and knee may be, but the rest of his body is not there yet. If he had been kept it is possible that he would sit 2-3 more weeks continuing to rehab.

The odds of him getting picked up right now is pretty slim, 3-4 weeks he may have a better chance once he is in better condition and injuries have hit teams.

Would it not then be a prudent decision to waive him, keep a player that can take the reps and help keep some competition up, hope like hell no team grabs him, and possibly bring him back once he can be considered ready again? I know it is risky, but we are talking about a guy who has only taken a handfull of NFL snaps, had an extreme injury, and has been out of football for almsot 2 full years.

If you believe the Smith comments in the Chronicle, then that is exactly what they are doing, IMO. Rolling the dice and hoping. Dunta is already taking one roster spot and they cannot afford to lose another spot. In a week or two there will be injuries to someone, and perhaps by then he is in shape.

coloradodude 07-23-2008 03:59 PM

Football is a nasty sport at times. You either come back from an injury or you can't.

He played two games. Everything else is speculation about potential.

At least this news isn't about Dunta. He contributed.

Keith 07-23-2008 08:24 PM

Panthers have claimed Spencer off waivers.

http://www.panthers.com/Common/Article.aspx?id=34016

ohhhhhh.... I hope the Texans knew what they were doing here.

kravix 07-23-2008 10:39 PM

Wow. I was so wrong about a team not picking him up. I hope he does well there.

barrett 07-23-2008 11:34 PM

The guy played two games so far in his NFL career and is apparently not close to playing in the near future. This should not be huge news that he got cut.

I think the only reason he is so highly regarded by fans is that he happens to play a position the Texans have been awful at throughout their existence. So we all view his unknown as preferrable to our past knowns.

Nconroe 07-24-2008 02:43 AM

and we knew we had guys on the payroll who when cut other teams would pickup, first Gray, now Spencer. probably several more guys. the good is it means we judge the guys we keep as even better for the style of play we want here under Kubiak. Best of luck to Spencer in future.

KJ3 07-24-2008 08:02 AM

man, it worries me a bit that the panthers picked him up so fast...
