My Guys

Okay, the All-Star games are in the books. This is my list of players that I would draft for the Texans. Since this is the first list, I'm sure that it will have additions/subtractions and updates to follow. However, this is my initial gut feeling going into the Combine and Pro Days.

The 1st 5 picks is who I'd take at #15. 6 - 14 are 1st round picks that I'd like to trade down and still select.
Picks 15 - 32 are probaby where we are in the 2nd round.
Picks 43 - 52 are probably 4th round picks.

Right now, anybody below 52 is a crap shoot as to which round they will be selected in. Invariably, when I do a draft board, guy that I feel are worthy of 5th round picks are available in the 6th and 7th or even UDFAs.

I will concede that I probably have guys rated lower than most boards have them right now. I suppose, I have them listed where they are because I hope they will slip.

idymoe 01-26-2009 11:39 AM

I appreciate all the effort you put into this.
Just for grins, I would take:

1-Raji
2-Paul Kruger - I don't think Cushing will be there
3-Rashad Johnson - I really hope someone else falls to round 3
4-Darry Beckwith
5-Bear Pascoe
6-Gartrell Johnson
7-Kory Sheets

I think Gartrell Johnson would be a good complement to S.S., and if S.S went down, Sheets could probably fill in adequately.

By the way, Roy, when do you think Delmas and Tyronne Green will go?

Who do you want to fall to the 3rd round? I'd guess that Delmas will be selected late 2nd to early 3rd and Green is 3-4 range.

idymoe 01-26-2009 01:32 PM

Ha, how wishful is ridiculous? Delmas? Chung, Ayers, Shaughnessy, Brace, Sean Smith. Probably none of the above will be there. I really don't have much to base my preferences on other than measureables and a few times I've actually seen some of these guys play.

TrickyTexan 01-26-2009 04:26 PM

most ridiculous thing i saw over the weekend was Josh Freeman going in the top 20..what a joke..He is a poor man's Tony Banks.

Roy P 01-26-2009 06:29 PM

Well, one of the reasons I like to make My Guys is to use it for mock drafts. Since DraftTek runs simulations, I compared my list to their 7 round mock and this is what I came away with.

1 - DT Peria Jerry Ole Miss 6' 3" 295 4.98
2 - RB Donald Brown Connecticut 5' 10" 210 4.49
3 - LB Cody Brown Connecticut 6' 2" 242 4.68
4 - LB Scott McKillop Pittsburgh 6' 1" 243 4.74
5 - QB John Parker Wilson Alabama 6' 2" 215 4.82
6 - TE Bear Pascoe Fresno St 6' 5" 257 4.86
7 - LB Lee Robinson Alcorn State 6' 2" 243 4.68

So, no help for the Secondary is my biggest complaint. I could have drafted DT Darryl Richard in the 7th, but since I had Jerry in the 1st, it seemed redundant. Cody Brown is my SAM/DE where Lee Robinson will push last year's 4th round pick at the WILL. McKillop is a MLB who may or may not allow Ryans to play the WILL. I could have drafted FS Marcel McBath in the 7th, but I'm not sure if he moves out one of the Brandons. I was hopeful Rashad Johnson would slide down to my 4th round pick, but Seattle snagged him at #101.

I think your draft would really help next year, regardless of no secondary. Things can go wrong, just like they can go right, but.. DRob should be more recovered from his severe injuries. Molden should be a lot more comfortable next year mentally, with a season under his belt. Reeves doesn't kill you. Wilson certainly doesn't kill you. Barber could be ready to step up next year. I don't know if he was just flipping something out there, or if he heard something from the staff, but McClain said in his chat today that he expects Wilson and Barber to be the starting safeties next year. Of course, the secondary could also be improved with a free agent. Surely, we will get at least one free agent that will be an upgrade.

Jan 28, 2009 Update:

Well, like I said, I'd be making changes. For example, I somehow left off Purdue DT Alex Magee. I probably still don't have him high enough on my board, but at least now he's on my radar. Also, the Texas vs. Nation game is this week, so I'll probably end up moving up OLB Lee Robinson of Alcorn State. I'm still considering adding DE Pierre Walters of Eastern Illinois.

I'm wondering if some of the "stud" LBs drop like Ryans and Posluszny did in their drafts.

1. I'm pretty sure we already cut loose Brandon Mitchell.

2. If we take a QB in the fifth we will almost for sure have to carry three QBs on the roster all year, something I feel pretty confident Kubiak doesn't want to do. If we don't carry that 5th rounder on the roster, he will likely be snatched up by another team as a free 5th round draft pick.

Yes. I can't fathom a guy that size as a ZBS OL for Gibbs.

I read that Johnson is the biggest baby ever born in the state of Louisiana. 15 lbs 14 oz. Unbelievable.

That size, and the fact that he moves like he has giant bricks on his feet.

I am wondering whether the ZBS is as effective at sea level in the 4th qtr as it is in Denver. It appeared that we had an enormous problem pushing the ball in from 3-4 yds out. I watched HJ in the one-on-one drills during Senior Bowl week and he had trouble with speed rushers running around him, but nobody ran through him. The right side of the South line where he started as RT I believe. fairly shut down the vaunted B J Raji. That was how I saw it in the first half and maybe the second half judging by the score, I missed that.

He and Eric Winston would be a formidable right side with maybe Alex Mack, Max Unger, Eric Wood or Antoine Caldwell thrown in at center.

It's not the size, but the athleticism that keeps him from being a ZBS guy. If you could find a guy that big and strong who moved well enough to fit Gibbs scehme....I think Gibbs would need to change his underwear.

I was indirectly saying that his size prevents the athleticism needed.

I have to date these boards so that I don't come in and update 3 times on the same day. I'll try to refrain for the next few days. With all of the hubbub about who we should pick at #15, I mentioned that Jeremy Maclin would not be a bad option. As a matter of fact, in a given scenario I mentioned he was the BPA and that sparked off a long conversation. Just to show that I don't think JMac is the very best player in the draft, I thought I'd revisit My Guys. I have also shown my disrespect for Malcolm Jenkins in a Mock draft, so this also reflects where I put him. Lastly, this shows where I have Laurainitis, Cushing, and all the other favorites that I would be more than happy drafting (in the 2nd round).

He's 50lbs lighter than HJ, so I hope he's a little more athletic. Also, I'm considering using him at RG instead of RT. It's probably a moot point anyway, because where I have him listed is most likely much lower than when he'll be off the board.

jppaul 02-04-2009 10:33 PM

From what I saw he had real problems out in space and with speed rushers. More of a lock on and maul type that the Ravens or the Steelers would use.

I agree with jp seemed like a RT or even a guard to me, not a LT at all.

I say we draft Herman (Monster) Johnson and put him at DT. Hey if anyone can tie up 2 blockers he could. 6'7" 386. What center would want that big SOB ligned up across from him?:D Seriously I wonder if he could do it?

Again, let me say that the only reason I'd want Loadholt is to play RG. In a ZBS I wouldn't be asking him to pull and lead the way on sweeps. He looked pretty good at getting to the second level and would help on short yardage and goal line situations when an OL needs to move the DL back off the line of scrimmage.

Now, if somebody wants to draft him early on and put him at OT, then I'll simply move on to the next player on my draft list.

Seriously though even if he just falls down he is still a 5 ft wide 5 ft tall puddle of a man, and sitting down I imagine that he has great leverage. :D

The Bucs used to do something like that in goal line situations, dive forward at the opponents knee level.

Imagine the possibilities.

Naw, I got you RP, he would be real useful on goaline situations at RG, as a drive blocker. As we all know the problem with ZBS is around the goalline, because the OL is lighter they are not as effective inside the redzone where the opponent knows you are going to run. The biggest baby in the history of Louisana could sure help out there.

It has been a week and now I've seen some official numbers from the Combine. Some guys have been added and some have been dropped. Others have been moved up or down my board. So, here's where I am on the 24th. If I get more information from Pro-Days etc. there is still time for improvement. Not every 40 time is official, and many are simply best guesses. Those with DNP obviously did not run. I'm guessing a 4.54 for Crabtree when healthy.

Glad to see I am not the only one who likes D Brown in the 1st.

Wouldn't you love to have about 3 or 4 picks in the 2nd.

And you are giving McGee a 4th round grade? Wow!

So are looking for Matthews at 15 or do you trade down?

Roy P 02-24-2009 10:40 PM

Ok, the DraftTek folk haven't updated their mock for the Combine movers, but I just couldn't wait. Using my new board, this is what I did....

1. OLB/DE Clay Matthews. I'd like to be able to trade down, but I really like what I see here and if I can't get good return, I'll just take him at #15.

2. RB Donald Brown. I doubt that I'll be able to get him after the post-combine update is finished. In reality, I'll probably be getting my 3rd round pick here.

3. DE Lawrence Sidbury Jr. This guy is going to shoot up boards like Matthews will. All the talk about 3-4 hybrids and teams that are switching is going to make the supply dry up in a hurry. The focus has been on Maybin, English, and Cushing, but that will be changing here shortly.

4. OC AQ Shipley. Well, he's not Eric Wood or Alex Mack, but he's got some tools to work with. I'm not sure if he can play the OG position, but he should be better than Studdard.

5. FS CJ Spillman. I sort of waffled back and forth between he and Chris Clemons since Clemons ran a better 40 yard dash. However, I went with instincts over measurables on this one and 4.5 is not horrible at FS.

6. QB Stephen McGee. The main reason that I like this kid is because of his ability to throw accurately on the run with good arm strength. We may have a couple of years to teach him the other stuff. Think Kevin Kolb without giving up a 2nd round pick.

7. DE Derek Walker. I realize that I drafted Sidbury, but he's going to wear down if I don't rotate him. Walker is probably better on short yardage and goal line defense, but he can also give a little something in the pass rush too. He is my "poor man's" Robert Ayers.

I'm intriqued by NT Terrance Knighton of Temple. I watched him the Texas vs. the Nation game. At 6'3" 321lbs, he ran a 5.16 (comparable to BJ Raji). Of course there's a reason he's a UDFA and not a top 1st round pick.

Don't forget the extra 4th round pick from Minn. It's supposed to be a done deal.

Well, I'm still shuffling my deck and discarding players. I'm down to my 70 players. Also, I want to see how the Combine effects the drafttek Mock. They should have a new one up sometime today (Wednesday). Then I'll put in the extra Sage pick and maybe even a potential Jacoby Jones pick (I'll guess 5th round).

idymoe 02-25-2009 12:56 PM

I don't think he is on your list, but what do you think about Mike Wallace. I like him in the late rounds, especially if they get rid of JJ. He did well in the Senior Bowl and ran really fast at the combine. Watching him run the gauntlet, it seemed his head barely moved vertically at all.

I think Wallace is similar to Mike Thomas in terms of atheticism. Thomas however has better WR skills - getting separation off the line, route running, hands, etc. I think Wallace is similar to Jerome Mathis - he's just fast.

idymoe 02-25-2009 07:00 PM

You have Thomas in with your 3rd rounders. Wallace could last until the 6th or 7th round. I think at this point, Draftek has him undrafted, although that surely will change after the combine. Thomas is not quite 5'8" while Wallace is over 6'. If you don't pick up Thomas early, I think Wallace could be a good value late.

If I were to guess, Wallace gets picked in the 4th or 5th because of his 40 time. I'm also trying to make my list as stream-lined as possible. There's several players who may be "good value" in the 6th or 7th rounds. I think I have enough of those on my list to not be adding to it. Some times, less is more. :)

idymoe 02-25-2009 11:29 PM

There are guys I like better in the 4th and 5th, and if Jacoby doesn't leave, I would rather not draft a wr.

Roy P 02-26-2009 10:08 PM
