Official Texans @ Jaguars Game Thread, 11/13/2016

The 5-3 Texans head off to Jacksonville on Sunday to take on the 2-6 Jaguars. The Texans will be looking for their first road win, the Jags will be looking for their first true home win (their other "home" win was in London).

Jags QB Blake Bortles has thrown for 2156 yds, 59.2% completion, 14 TDs, 10 INTs and has a 80.1 rating. The main rushers are TJ Yeldon (253 yds, 3.6 avg), Chris Ivory (236 yds, 4.1 avg) and Bortles himself (199 yds, 6.0 avg). Leading receivers are Allen Hurns (443 yds, 14.3 avg), Marqise Lee (442 yds, 13.0 avg), Allen Robinson (442 yds, 11.3 avg) and Julius Thomas (245 yds, 11.7 avg). The Jag defense is a respectable 11th allowing 334.5 yds/gm but 25th in points allowed (26.9).

The Texans don't get much respect in recent power rankings but many keep picking them to win week after week. It's been noted that the Texans schedule actually becomes easier as they face only one team with a winning record (Oakland) in their final eight games....

I'm feeling reasonably confident although wary how easily this squad turns into a pumpkin on the road. The Texans have a higher winning percentage over the years when playing in Florida than they do playing in Texas.

One thing critics have noticed is that Bortles gets a lot of his yards in garbage time after the other team has pulled way ahead. The Texans do not specialize in pulling way ahead so it will be interesting to see what happens down the stretch of a tight game.

The Texans should be wary of the TE tandem of Julius Thomas and Marcedes Lewis. Hopefully, our safeties are back at 100% for this game.

nunusguy 11-11-2016 02:32 PM

I could feel reasonably confidant about this game if it were in NRG but not on the road.

Arky 11-13-2016 11:29 AM

A bit of funny business going on with the spread..... Jags now favored by 2.5.

Takes big money to move the line so it looks like the sharps/syndicate bettors love the Jags for some reason.... If I had to guess, it's a situational thing: Texans lousy road team, Jags showing improvement, Texans somewhat banged up.....plus, there may be some other long term metrics/trends that are pointing to the Jags....

Frankly, I don't see it.... Texans have had 2 weeks to prepare and the Jags haven't proven much of anything, yet. I'm on the Texans....still, this might be a game where everything goes wrong.....

Osweiler is a joke.

nunusguy 11-13-2016 01:42 PM

What was that last series about ? O'Brien didn't even act like he was interested in getting into position and salvaging any points, like maybe a FG from 40 or 35 yards ? Sure Novak can't hit if from 50 but maybe he can from 35.
It gets more and more discouraging watching Osweiler. I almost wished he had a gotten nicked up from the out of bounds hit from the Jags defender so they would have to bring in Savage for a few plays.

Whew. Well, it's becoming the standard ugly Texans win (TM)...

Keith 11-13-2016 03:24 PM

Akeem Hunt should have never been cut.

For as ugly as this season has been at times, the Texans at 6-3 haven't been three games over .500 since the glory days of Schaub iirc. So there's that. Next week in primetime against the Raiders in Mexico is setting us up for another national nightmare most likely, but it sure would be nice if they'd flip the script on that one. Would be huge for potential playoff seeding.

barrett 11-13-2016 03:34 PM

Blake Bortles' throwing motion looks like a long armed pitching machine. I think his mechanics have gotten much worse since he's been in the league. Maybe he actually had talent at some point and JAX just ruined him. But his throwing motion is turning into right handed Tebow.

We were terrible today and led wire to wire in a road win. That is a testament to Jacksonville.

Our kicker was embarrassing, but their punter was worse. Not only did they give up the long return on a no hang time punt, but they punted from the 40 and put it 10 yards deep in our end zone. That is the worst punt I've ever seen. Then he added a shank out of bounds.

Our QB missed 9 in a row at one point and couldn't move the ball. Theirs countered by completing passes to the opposing team.

We move to 6-3 but Tennessee is looking frisky enough that we might need to win 10 games.

Arky 11-13-2016 07:37 PM

Early line = Raiders by 5.5 on MNF....

HPF Bob 11-14-2016 05:06 AM

6-3 record and -28 in point differential. LOL. That's maximizing your point production. Maybe Oz is one of those "just win, baby" QBs you judge on winning percentage (now 11-5 for his career), not on his stats. Seriously, you look at him vs. Bortles and wonder to yourself which one was once a third overall pick.

You could see how much better we looked defensively with Demps and Hal back in the secondary.

Raiders are an interesting matchup. The keys are shutting down the running game and getting a solid job defending Amari Cooper. Oakland should be a team we can move the ball on at get some scoring opportunities. I think we can beat the spread but not as confident we can win the game.

Still, we have an enviable cushion - 1.5 game lead plus the silent 1/2 game of winning head-to-head for a tiebreaker. 3-0 in the division and suddenly, that Packers game doesn't look so impossible to win.

popanot 11-14-2016 07:56 AM

Hard to complain after a W, but... 27 attempts and 99 yards from our starting 'NFL' QB. But hey, it's not about stats. We've all been teleported back to the Carr/Capers era where the QB is incapable of pushing the ball beyond 4yds. Well, at least Brock hasn't started 'scrambling' out of bounds behind the LOS.....yet.

Not a huge deal, but WTH was OB thinking running the ball the last 2 or 3 plays of the game rather than just kneeling down? Greater risk of a fumble and Miller is already banged up so why have him take on the extra hits? OB had a couple brain-fart moments yesterday.

Man, this franchise!!! :mad::mad:

I give us virtually no hope in that game.
This Sunday since our game is Monday night, I may for the first time in years need to go to a Sports Bar to see the Tennesse vs Indy game since you know that CBS will be telecasting the Baltimore @ Cowboys as the AFC game.

My DirecTV's screen guide is showing the Baltimore/Cowboy game this Sunday. There's a chance the local network can switch it out but I wouldn't hold my breath.... Might be too many Cowboy fans in the Houston area to allow that to happen. Conversely, seen it many times on the TV maps where the Dallas area chooses to watch the Philly/Giant/Redskin game over the Texans (the snobs!).....

------------------------------------------

Thought the pass rush was kinda weak yesterday. Slap/push/push/slap/push and then stand around..... Minus the two sacks, Bortles had good protection ... Good for DJ Reader, though, getting his sack - he's the "future"...

------------------------------------------

In the Oakland game, they'll be coming off their bye and should be rested up. Wouldn't surprise me to see the line hit 7+...... Perhaps they (the Raiders) will drink plenty of the local water to stay hydrated....

popanot 11-14-2016 01:38 PM

Me thinks Carr (and his teammates in support of him) is going be a wee bit motivated to embarrass the Texans on national TV. And considering the Texans history in primetime, he'll likely succeed.

I doubt they care at all about what happened to the QB's brother over a decade ago. Half those guys weren't shaving when David Carr was our QB.

Don't really know if it's a snob thing since obviously games involving division rivals are much more relevant and important to Cowboys fans just as such a game is much more important to Texans fans like me than a game involving non Texans division rivals like Baltimore & Dallas.

Yes, I understand that. Calling them "snobs" was a joke (that apparently got lost in the translation)...

I would say TV programmers well understand that the Cowboys are a big draw nationally and in the state of Texas. It's probably not enough to sway our local Houston stations to usurp the Cowboys so that some us Texan fans can watch our division rivals (the way they do it in Dallas).... I know I'd much rather see Titans vs. Colts - and I will cause I got a free year of Sunday Ticket this year....

HPF Bob 11-15-2016 02:32 AM

I'm not sure what tv station would *want* to pass up a matchup of two division leaders for a matchup of two also-rans. They have to think about their ratings, you know.

And if the seeding holds up, we're on course for a New England-Dallas Super Bowl in H-town which means you can make an absolute killing if you have some tickets to scalp.

I was glad to see the sack from Reader (although he was really just cleaning up someone else's rush). If we plays regularly, we can call him My Weekly Reader.

Not so fast with that NE-Dal game, the Pats don't look so invincible now with that home field loss to Seattle.
And speaking of Seattle, looks they might be able to give Dallas a real tussle for the NFC title.
