On another note, I started a Yahoo survivor group as an experiment. Every week just pick one sure-fire winner. It's a 3-strikes and your out group, i.e. you can be wrong twice but the 3rd time, you're out. If participation is good, I might keep it going.....

I believe you can join the pickem contest anytime during the season (but of course, everyone else will have a head start on you). The survival contest I think, closes after the Week 1.

Edit: also, always a good idea in your preferences to set it to get the email reminder every week. Very easy to forget at least once during the 17+ weeks....

Will a reminder with link on the survivor challenge be sent out soon?

For those not in, it is very easy to join and quick to keep up with, just for fun.

I've decided I'm too busy to do a suicide contest this year and since there's already one forming at Yahoo, go ahead and participate in that one. Sorry for the late notice but I've been, well, y'know, busy.

I was tempted to apply the Week 1 jinx to the R-wordskins but decided to take Detroit in what looks like a classic bait job. The Lions are a September team while the Giants always start slow. It's in Detroit and Eli Manning has not had good protection facing on of the fiercest pass rushes in the league. I'm not buying the Lions as a playoff team but I am buying them as Week 1 Pretenders.

Well, rough week in both pick'em and survivor leagues, but there is always next week. Just one of sixteen down so far.

As predicted, the Lions won. I'm sticking with the NFC North again this week as the other New York team gets a whipping on the road. That would be the Jets taking on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers at Lambeau. The name of the NFL game for most clubs is parity. Green Bay is 0-1 and coming off a long week after losing to Seattle and ready to get the stink out of their mouths in front of their home fans. The Jets, meanwhile, are fat and happy (like their coach) after a home win over Oakland. The Packers aren't Oakland and the Jets still don't have a quarterback.

And Gary Kubiak does what he does best and gives me "L's" in my fantasy games.... Bet against him = L, bet with him = L. :rolleyes:

I was heavy on Pittsburgh on many levels. Any time I do this, it's almost a guaranteed "L". But that's the way it goes.... ;)

Man, this survivor league, and league parity is getting me so far.

First Buffalo beats Chicago .

And then Cleveland beats New Orleans.

New Orleans is one of five 0-2 teams. Texans one of six 2-0 teams.

Let me see, who does Jacksonville play this week.

2-0 now with Detroit and Green Bay (which gave me a scare).

There are few safe plays in Week 3 so I will take the obvious one - Oakland at New England. Going with the Patriots and really wouldn't mind losing either. I hate them SOB's. Or maybe the Raiders could lose the game but put Brady out for 12 weeks. That would be good enough. :D

3-0 now as Patriots, even on a bad day, was still too much for Oakland.

A trend is developing. FloriDUH teams are 1-8 straight up. The Dolphins are visiting Oakland which means they might win. Tampa Bay is visiting Pittsburgh which is very tempting but Tampa played Thursday night and the Steelers played Sunday night plus they lost three defensive starters. Pittsburgh and their refs should still win easily but I decided to hold off on choosing them.

Instead, I'll take the overwhelming choice of survival pickers, San Diego at home over Jackassville, even thought the Chargers lost Woodhead for the season and the Jags showed signs of life under Bortles.

Sometimes, success in this game is all about avoiding upsets. Surely the Steelers were going to beat winless Tampa Bay at home but they didn't which means the Steelers are a lock now to regain some swag in Jackassville this week. They'll be playing with a sense of urgency now instead of coasting.

Oh no, he's going there....
 

5-0 and time to risk it all on the jinx card. :eek: Houston NEVER beats Indy. NEVER. Going with the Colts even on the road in a short week. And if jinxing the Colts works, I'll be happy to lose.

It's a sad, sad time when not even the playing the jinx card works. :p

In my pickem leagues, I picked the Colts to win and the Texans to cover (in the spread leagues). I was one missed FG away from hitting them both. Curses!

Well, 6-0 and, by my count, the only one without a loss.

This week is a tough one. I don't want to play my Super Bowl cards yet (Seattle and Denver) and I've already used the Patriots. Buffalo at home against the Vikes is my second choice but I just don't trust Neckbeard enough not to screw it up.

I don't like going with the road team or I might be enthusiastic about Cleveland (at Jackassville), Arizona (at Oakland) or Seattle (at St. Louis).

The sucker bet is Dallas at home vs. the Giants. Have we forgotten how often Eli Manning has beaten the Cowboys at JerryWorld? Pass on that.

Which leaves me to Baltimore at home against a collapsing Atlanta Falcons. Honestly, I'm not all that comfortable with this one but you have a dome team in the elements at Empty Bank Stadium where the Ratbirds are usually able to find a way to win. In real life, they are seven point favorites.

Gift card for the winner of the Pickem contest has been bumped to $20. It will be in the form of and e-gift and the winner will need to order online and then click on "Gift Card" during the checkout process. Once the $20 has been used up, any remaining balance due on an order can be paid with another means (cash, credit card, etc.). Not sure if it will work with a delivery boy or at the store (probably), but guaranteed to work online.

Creating an online account at the pizza website to order is probably the best way to go.... I like to order online and then go to the store to pickup my order(carryout). No expiration on the gift card. I will send the gift card numbers to the winner's email or PM inbox.

7-0 and there's not much discussion this week. I love the storyline of Colt McCoy coming back to the state of Texas on Monday Night Football to take on the Cowboys but who are we kidding? These are the banged-up and politically incorrect Redskins going against one of the NFL's hottest teams in a rivalry game.

The Skins may put up a fight and I'll be rooting for Colt (hook 'em) but my vote has to go with Dallas this week. Romo may still lay an egg when the winds start to blow cold but he's a hot QB for now.

Its games like the survivor and the pick'em that remind me why I stopped gambling on football...... I suck at it.

Yeah, they are fun until you gamble and loose.

Ya, I'm not a fan of the Longhorns (see my handle), but I like seeing that Colt McCoy is getting a second chance and I'll be rooting for him. He won me over when he was on Gruden's QB camp. Gruden was being the jerk like he sometimes does and he (McCoy) was having nothing to do with it...

Dallas will probably win but I'm taking the points in the spread pickems.... Would not mind if Native Americans upset them, though...

So do I. At least, the last time I did with real money....

I did find something different, though. I don't normally pimp other websites but this one http://www.sportsbookreview.com/forum/ has a really cool (IMO) system going on. Join the forum and you get 6 pts/day just for clicking on a thread (daily). Once you get a little bank of points, they have a full blown sportsbook you can wager your points in. Football/Baseball/Soccer/Basketball.... everything.. college and pro.

You can also "Go Pro" in which case you'll receive 12 pts/day. Going Pro requires you do donate $100 to one of 3 charities. Good for a year. You'll get that back from the daily points.

When you get a substantial amount of points, you can spend them on pizza gift cards (that's where the pickem contest prize is coming from), Home Depot/Lowes gift cards, Electronics, clothing, turn your points into another charity donation, and many other options at the website's "store". I like the website because it satisfies my inner degenerate gambler without costing real money - IMO, the idea of donating your entry fee to charity is genius... I've been having a pretty good season so far in the sportsbook and in one of their pickem contests.... Must point out that this is not a family friendly website, however..... ;)

Finally got my first loss but was happy to take the bullet so Colt could stop the Cowboy juggernaut.

Oakland at Seattle looked like almost too good of a mismatch, one of those where the NFLPA (through intermediaries, of course) puts down money on the Raiders and cleans up while the rest of us wonder how it could have possibly happened.

So, I opted for the next biggest mismatch which was Cincy at home over Jackassville.

9-1 so far but the good options are getting more difficult to find. I'm almost forced to take three-win Washington at home against one-win Tampa Bay even though I don't feel all that good about it.

Chuck is the only other player with just one loss.

This is the first week where I've been uncomfortable with my pick. I have some good teams left, I just hate picking road teams.

looks like I got strike 3 on survival league with Tampa beating Washington.

And lot of upset type wins in pickem league. oh well.

I'm done, too. I was going to pick Washington, but I decided to go with Denver as a "safer" pick. I looked at the picks made for this week by everyone else. We all had Denver or Washington. It's between Bob and Chuck now. good luck, y'all.

I went with Washington so I have two strikes. I woulda been pissed if I selected Denver though. ;)

At least neither of us wasted a pick on a good team.

It was Wipeout Weekend in the Survivor pool. All knocked out 'cept for Chuck and Bob. Thought Washington at home against Tampa Bay was a safe pick but any given Sunday strikes again.....Oh well, good luck to the survivors.....

Washington almost bit me for the third time this season but SF managed to win late so Chuck and I go into Thanksgiving week with one loss left.

Some road teams will probably survive but I'm going to opt for the four-win Rams at home against the Raiders. We'll see if enthusiasm gets Oakland two wins a row with some extra days to prepare. If the Rams play like they did against Denver, however, it should be no problem.

Amazingly, I still have Seattle, Denver, Philly and Cincinnati out there to select but I just haven't found the right week to take them.

Pittsburgh knocked me out since I took Cincy at home.
