Official 2011 NFL Draft Rounds 4-7 Thread

with glover quin likely moving to FS now, do you still draft FS just in case? i wouldn't mind Acho or Deunta Williams

If you read the interview on the Texans web site with the new DB coach, he said they are a split safety defense, they want both guys to play their half of the field, be able to cover, and be solid tacklers if a runner gets into the secondary. So they are really looking for two Glover Quin types. So I would say a physical FS is still in play.

I like Quinton Carter out of Oklahoma.

popanot 04-30-2011 08:56 AM

I'd like to see them pick up a powerful C/G (Brandon Fusco, maybe?). It doesn't look like they think Caldwell is the answer and Meyers just sucks. I'd also like to see them pick up PR/KR (no more Slaton or JJ, please!!) and a Punter. Not sexy picks, but much needed and the draft is where you get these guys, IMO.

nunusguy 04-30-2011 10:09 AM

I like the Reed selection with our second pick, but please Mr Wade can I have another ? Best case scenario for Barwin is that he's back to top form
near the end of the 2011 season IMO. In the meantime we need pass rushers.
As long as the guy can also help us in ST, I say take a long-shot on a guy who has the potential to rush the QB and don't hesitate to use our 4-round pick.

Roy P 04-30-2011 11:21 AM

I am looking at Chris Carter...Davon House...Chimdi Chekwa, Deunta Williams, Mark Legree, Brandon Burton, and Jerrell Powe

Arky 04-30-2011 11:24 AM

Tampa Bay trades up in front of us @ #104 for Luke Stocker, TE, eheh....

Texans up next...

edit: Texans trade with Redskins!

Roy P 04-30-2011 11:24 AM

We traded down? Nice...I'll take more picks.

Nconroe 04-30-2011 11:25 AM

oh, we traded down with Washington.

sounds like we swapped 4ths, got two fifths, gave up a sixth, .. sounds like a fair deal for us

Roy P 04-30-2011 11:28 AM

#127 and two 5th round picks..#144 and #152

Arky 04-30-2011 11:28 AM

Texans get late 4th and two 5th rounders..... Thank you, Shannies... ;)

Special teamers on the way....

I had Chris Carter ranked pretty high on my draft board, so I would have to take him. Taking Deunta Williams and/or Mark Legree in the 5th round might be an option. Wade keeps saying that Mitchell or somebody on the roster can play the NT...I'd still like a 335lbs guy like Powe to come to training camp just to see how that would look. :)

Yes, gave up a 6th seems to be the case. NFLN didn't report this....

So, the Texans have left (at present):

4. #30
5. #13, #21
6. n/a
7. #11, #51

Back to 8 picks total....

Roy P 04-30-2011 12:15 PM

Rest of my draft board

OLB Chris Carter Fresno St
S Deunta Williams North Carolina
S Mark Legree Appal St

Roy P 04-30-2011 12:32 PM

CB Rashad Carmichael Va Tech 5'10" 182 4.38

Explosive, rangy athlete with nice acceleration and top-end speed. Lanky and slender, but isn't afraid to go for the big hit. Fearless tackler willing to engage bigger backs and receivers head-on. Gets his head around in coverage and adjusts his body nicely to the ball in the air. Has a second gear that allows him to correctively close gaps between himself and receivers who have gained separation. Light-footed, smooth backpedal maintaining still head and upper body. Displays good awareness of both the quarterback's eyes and receiver location when playing off in zone coverage. Gets his hands up quickly to make plays on balls that he may get his head around late on. Keeps his eyes in the backfield and shows good zone discipline when defending the run.

nunusguy 04-30-2011 12:39 PM

Looks like the new Wade-D is under no obligation to cover-up the mess of crap in the Texans back-end, i.e., another rousing vote of no-confidance for Kareem & Co. And you know we are almost surely gonna also add a FA CB to the mix.

I think some of these guys are going to see more time on special teams than on the defense, i.e. depth... Can't give up on a #1 (Kareem) so soon....

Roy P 04-30-2011 12:48 PM

It would make me feel better if we were able to draft a Safety with our next pick. Apparently, I way over-valued Chris Carter and his 11 sacks and 16 TFLs in college last season. Wondering still if we get a NT or not.

Oh I agree about Kareem and we also need ST players, but I can't help but think that the Wade-corps has by now seen the tape more than once on the Texans DBs and feel like they need a plan B.

Speaking of over valuing, any thoughts about Houston following all the way to the third round ?

Popping positive at the Combine is a big no-no. "Character issues" have a way of devaluing a prospect. A few years ago I was very high on Carl Nicks and he got into a fight at a party after the Senior Bowl and he fell like a rock. I think the Saints ended up getting him in the 4th round. Nicks has been a very good LG and I'll be interested in seeing how well Houston plays for KC. If he stays out of trouble, I think he can be a force.

Roy P 04-30-2011 01:21 PM

Shiloh Keo played Safety, but I am not one of his biggest fans when Deunta Williams, Mark Legree, and DeAndre McDaniel were available. We shall see how this pick plays out.

Arky 04-30-2011 01:22 PM

Shiloh Keo, Safety from Idaho

Has punt returner experience...

:D

Thought I would add this little blurb I found...

"The Texans find more help for a beleaguered secondary at pick 144 with Idaho S Shiloh Keo, who earned praise from Deion Sanders at the scouting combine for his ball skills and hustle."

Roy P 04-30-2011 01:29 PM

Okay the next need, in my opinion is at NT. Maybe we can develop Jerrell Powe or take a guy off my draft board from Notre Dame....Ian Williams.

nunusguy 04-30-2011 01:33 PM

Keo looks like Pollard-lite to me: big hitter but lacking the kind of foot-speed to cover which is a skill that Wade seems to want in his safetys, both of them. ST player supreme though and maybe DBackfield depth in a pinch.

I like this pick. Keo is another high motor guy. He will play on every special teams, he is a little slow in his 40 time, but he is always around the ball and he makes plays.

I have a problem when your FS and the 5-Technique Defensive end run the same 40.

Might lack the athleticism to handle coverage responsibilities in the NFL. Is a tough defender, but isn't particularly instinctive and doesn't possess the fluidity and straight-line speed to mask his lack of awareness. Can lay the big hit on an unsuspecting ballcarrier, but to do so generally has to leave his feet and has a tendency to duck his head and rely on the collision to knock the ballcarrier to the ground, rather than wrapping his arms securely.

Arky 04-30-2011 01:44 PM

TJ Yates, QB, North Carolina? Umm, sounds like Kubes just took over the war room...lol

Roy P 04-30-2011 01:45 PM

We selected our back-up QB T.J. Yates. He is one of 'My Guys' so I don't have too much of a problem with this pick. I saw him play the Texas v. The Nation game in San Antonio and he should be a good developmental guy. Wondering why Kubiak rated him higher than Greg McElroy, though.

painekiller 04-30-2011 01:46 PM

OK Roy, this is a head scratchier here, TJ Yates QB from UNC, who is this guy?

I guess Smith Kubiak are back in charge. This appears to be early for this guy.

Another weak armed QB with no escape skills, Kubaik really has no clue when it comes to drafting QBs late, this is another Alex Brink, he could have gotten this kid as a UDFA.

"Weak armed" ? No way, the kid has got a gun !
But I suspect McNair thru a crumb to Kubiak, might feel sorry for him as it would seem Wade is now the de facto HC.

from the NFL.com site there breakdown of yates
Quote:

Yates likely does not possess enough physical tools (arm, feet) to be considered a future starter but has a ton of experience in a pro-style offense and could find a home as a backup. At times, appears to be a confident decision-maker in the pocket, capable of efficiently managing his team but occasionally forces throws and is not comfortable dealing with pressure. Shows good accuracy and touch in the short passing game but is not as effective when asked to drive the ball downfield. Tough player who has dealt with adversity and become a better player. Day 3 prospect.
I read has trouble driving the ball as weak armed, it will not be the first time I am wrong, but draft grade is 2.8 when 5+ is what is being drafted right now.
