WalterFootball.com 5 round mock 3.2.11

here is there take on the Texans 5 picks in this mock:
Quote:

#11 Houston Texans: Robert Quinn, DE/OLB, North Carolina
With the shift to Wade Phillips' 3-4, Houston will need a nose tackle to pair with ends Mario Williams and Antonio Smith. DeMeco Ryans and Brian Cushing would play inside linebacker, while the outside pass rushers would be Connor Barwin and... umm... Robert Quinn.

Quinn missed the 2010 season because the NCAA is ridiculously stupid, hypocritical and tyrannical. If he had played, he'd probably be a consensus top-five prospect, so Houston is getting major value with this selection.

Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:

1. Aldon Smith, DE/OLB - Other rush linebacker options. If Robert Quinn is off the board, Aldon Smith could be Houston's new pass-rusher.

2. Cameron Jordan or J.J. Watt, DE/DT - The Texans want an upgrade at five technique, and either Cameron Jordan or J.J. Watt could be the best player on Houston's board.

3. Prince Amukamara, CB - Prince Amukamara could be the pick if he's available. The Texans are looking for a top-flight cornerback to pair with Kareem Jackson.

#42 Houston Texans: Brandon Harris, CB, Miami
The Texans will be targeting a rush linebacker and a cornerback with their top two selections in the 2011 NFL Draft. Robert Quinn filled the former need with the 11th pick in the first round. Brandon Harris, the top player available, would satisfy the latter.

Despite taking Kareem Jackson in the first round of last year's draft, Houston still must address the cornerback position. Kareem Jackson has to improve, while Glover Quin would be better served as the nickel or free safety.

#73 Houston Texans: Jerrell Powe, NT, Ole Miss
With Amobi Okoye as their only option, the Texans are in the market for a nose tackle. Jerrell Powe is certainly worth taking in the third round.

#104 Houston Texans: Deunta Williams, FS, North Carolina
The Texans desperately need to address both safety positions this offseason. Free safety is more dire, as Eugene Wilson was recently released.

#135 Houston Texans: Joe Lefeged, S, Rutgers
Bernard Pollard is great in run support, but he's a huge liability in coverage. That's not a good thing if you're trying to beat Peyton Manning twice a year.
How can I complain about Quinn, Harris, Powe, Williams and Lefeged, my only issue I don't have many of these guys available when we take them in this mock.

With no starting safeties on the team any more, safeties has become a huge need with this team. Quinn and Nolan maybe the safeties next year, and I can be ok with that, but we need a talent influx and numbers added to the DBs on this team.

I thought they would try out S. McManis at FS, guess they still could.

My take using walters

11. Robert Quinn, OLB, UNC
42. Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami
73. Ahmad Black, S, Florida
104. Nate Irving, ILB, N.C. State
135. Ugo Chinasa, 3-4DE, Oklahoma State
173. Chykie Brown, CB, Texas

They added a 6th round
Quote:

Houston Texans: Steven Friday, DE/OLB, Virginia Tech
I'd be pretty surprised if the Texans didn't draft multiple rush linebackers this April for their new 3-4 defense.
As for my cherry pick?

11 Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor why not? they have him at 21, and in this draft the difference between 11 and 27 is not so much in terms of talent, just few superstars.
42 Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona
73 Dontay Moch, DE/OLB, Nevada
104 Deunta Williams, FS, North Carolina
135 Kenrick Ellis, NT, Hampton
173 Jalil Brown, CB, Colorado

I don't see this GM/HC going with more underage starters, Smith is a red shirt sophomore. He has the measurables, but ....

11 Brandon Harris* CB Miami 5' 9.4" 191
42 Dontay Moch DE Nevada 6' 1.3" 248
73 Tyler Sash* S Iowa 6' 0" 211

Dontae Moch put up some huge numbers at the Combine, but does he have the football savy to go along with it?

Deunta Williams ran a dissapointing 4.64/40.

One good thing about Moch, Wade Phillips worked with him at the Shriners game, so Wade will have insight into the kid, if Wade likes the kid we draft him, if Wade doesn't like the kid he is not drafted here.

Will Moch be a Texan? I can't say but our draft grade will have Wade's fingerprints all over it.

Drafttek.com 3.8.11 mock draft

Quote:

11 Robert Quinn North Carolina OLB34

Could the Mighty Quinn really fall this far? Uncle Wade sure hopes so, as the athletic Tar Heel pass-rusher is quite the specimen (should we say "Trophy Prospect") even if he did take last year off. He still has to prove he can make the conversion to an all-around OLB in Phillips' 3-4 alignment. He did move around quite a bit for North Carolina, most often rushing the passer - training in coverage responsibilities will be the next step in his progression. At 6'4" and 265 lbs, he immediately adds a presence to the flanks and if a team doesn't have OLB's, there is no point in running a 3-4.

#42 Johnny Patrick Louisville CB

A slick covering CB that has been moving up the Big Board ranks -- those of you who have not seen many Big East games have not witnessed one of the shining stars for the Louisville Cardinals. Let's face it -- Houston had the worst defensive secondary in the league last year and Patrick adds some much needed "attitude" to the corner position on the Texan defense. It was no secret to AFC South QB's that if they had time, Houston's secondary could be beat. Yes, Uncle Wade still has some needs on the front 7 positions for his 3-4 conversion project, but the secondary could not be ignored and this is excellent value at a position of dire need!

#73 Sione Fua Stanford DT34
#104 Steven Friday Virginia Tech OLB34
#141 Will Rackley Lehigh OG
#172 Jermale Hines Ohio State FS
#202 Nate Williams Washington SS
I'm starting to like the idea of Quinn at 11, he should be gone higher, and he would be out of character for the Texans to draft, but he was a stud on tape.

11 Robert Quinn North Carolina OLB34
42 Jabaal Sheard Pittsburgh OLB34
73 Tyler Sash Iowa SS
104 Chimdi Chekwa Ohio State CB
141 Niles Paul Nebraska WRF
172 Joe Lefeged Rutgers SS
202 Mark LeGree Appalachian State FS

This is a DB loaded draft, and some stud OL guys in the 2nd & 3rd rounds.

73 Jarvis Jenkins DT/NT Clemson 6' 4" 310

On another note, what do ya'll think about trying Dorin Dickerson out at S? He might see the field faster than if he was to stay at 3rd string WR. And we know he has 4.4 speed......just a thought.

No to Dickerson moving to defense, when was the last successful move of an offensive player to defense in the NFL? I really don't remember, not being a wise a$$.

As for a new cherry pick

11 Robert Quinn* DE UNC 6' 4" 265
42 Quinton Carter S Oklahoma 6' 0.5" 208
73 Stefen Wisniewski OG Penn State 6' 3" 313

Not my best effort, to many safeties. It is a position of need but no way 3 rookies safeties make the team. I liked Blitzwood mock, so I kept a few of his picks.

I know Kubiak is no Bill Bellichick, but
memba him? I saw a show on NFL network the other day
about the 2004 Patriots that gave me the idea.

http://www.patriotsgab.com/2007/11/2...own-activated/

The New England Patriots on Tuesday activated wide receiver Troy Brown from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, reviving the career of one of the most versatile players from the team’s three Super Bowl victories. He had been placed on the PUP list on August 28; he resumed practicing with the team on November 12, giving the Patriots until 4 PM EST Tuesday (today) to either activate, release or put him on injured reserve.

Brown, an 8th-round selection in the 1993 draft, has spent his entire career with the Patriots; as the longest-tenured member of the team, he has 557 career receptions (1st on franchise history) and 6,366 receiving yards (2nd all-time). He is also the team’s all-time leading punt returner with 246 returns for 2,570 yards; his 3 punt returns for touchdowns ties Irving Fryar for the team record.

During the 2004 season, Patriots head coach Bill Bellichick put Brown into a depleted secondary at cornerback; the move paid dividends as he responded with 14 tackles, 3 interceptions and 3 fumbles recovered. Brown also played defense in 2006, although on a more limited basis.

Thanks, I had forgotten this one. But I will also point out Brown was a seasoned veteran WR who understood route trees, offensive game plans and such, this is knowledge that Dickerson is still learning.

Brown was a solid contributor before the move and Dickerson is a bottom of the roster guy.

So I still say no way he is converted.

So I still say no way he is converted.

Brown was also a band-aid for the Pats' secondary rather than a permanent conversion to the other side of the ball.

The most successful offense-to-defense convert that I can think of is Nolan Cromwell, who was a QB at Kansas and a Pro Bowl safety for the LA Rams in the 80s. Tony Dungy was a QB at Minnesota and a backup DB for the Steelers in the 70s. Former Nebraska QB Scott Frost hung around for a few years as a safety, but mainly as backup and special teamer. And speaking of Nebraska QBs, who could forget the Texans' Jammal Lord experiment? :p There was an Ohio State RB named Butler By'Not'e who the Broncos drafted in 1994 and converted to CB but he never did much. Former Texas A&M RB Sirr Parker tried to switch to CB in the NFL but wasn't able to catch on.

I don't think they should try to convert Dickerson, especially this year when there's going to be little or no offseason coaching. Even in a more normal year it would be tough to do this because there's no NFL-Europe where he could get offseason reps in game conditions and with free agency there's less incentive to make the extra effort to develop a guy who may leave by the time he's ready to really contribute.

Drafttek.com 3.15.11 #24 mock draft

Quote:

11 Robert Quinn North Carolina OLB34
For the 2nd consecutive week, the Mighty Quinn falls to Houston; the athletic Tar Heel pass-rusher is quite the specimen (should we say "Trophy Prospect") even if he did take last year off. - Long Ball

42 Cameron Heyward Ohio State DE34
The front 7 conversion project of Wade's 3-4 continues - Cameron Heyward (son of "Iron-Head") has dropped in the rankings after receiving a pre-season 1st round grade based on his junior season. Although the Buckeye's senior year was not as dominant, he is good value in the 2nd round. After Quinn (OLB34) in the 1st round, this is the next building block in Houston's conversion to a 3-4 defense. The Texans' current roster only has 2 candidates to play DE in a 3-4: Mario Williams and Antonio Smith. Heyward compliments this duo nicely and provides an excellent rotation pattern for the 3-man line. - Long Ball

73 Jerrell Powe Mississippi DT34
104 Steven Friday Virginia Tech OLB34
141 DeMarcus Love Arkansas OG
172 Chris L. Rucker Michigan State CB
202 Nate Williams Washington SS
I like the start of this one but the DBs were ignored, and this is a deep draft for DBs.
