Neither do I. But that's why you try multiple boards multiple times because "you never know". I don't think we can get 4-for-1 trade downs either but they are so hard to resist.
|
I'm hoping another round of board updates comes out soon because this is using a CBS board from 3/22..

Look what fell out of the sky!!
Here's why you mock. Sometimes, the unexpected happens and you have to ask yourself "what will I do?". I used the Fanspeak board but, at 22, I was given several appealing choices: Conklin, a legit LT to plug in when Brown gets injured or needs to be cut. Ragland, the ILB who can be like Patrick Willis and would allow you to drop Cushing's contract after next year. Kelly, the OC I have wanted all along and... Carson Wentz!! - one of the top 2 QBs in the draft! Ok, so we have Osweiler now and this would create controversy but we may never get a chance to draft a QB like this again. You gotta take him, right? Well, I tried to trade down with Denver - no dice. Tried to trade down with the 49ers - not interested. Cleveland had taken Goff. Philly had no 2nds. The Jets would have been falling too far. So after giving it much thought I went with value. I took Wentz. Fortunately, Kelly was still there in the second but I had to alter my draft because I did not have the trade chips I wanted to add more picks. I swapped my third with Baltimore for a pair of fourths and liked overall, what I had done: 22: R1P22 QB CARSON WENTZ NORTH DAKOTA STATE 52: R2P21 C RYAN KELLY ALABAMA 104: R4P6 TE TYLER HIGBEE WESTERN KENTUCKY 119: R4P21 RB PAUL PERKINS UCLA 130: R4P32 CB CYRUS JONES ALABAMA 159: R5P20 S MILES KILLEBREW SOUTHERN UTAH 166: R5P27 DT ANTWAUN WOODS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 195: R6P20 G CONNOR MCGOVERN MISSOURI TRADE PARTNER: BALTIMORE RAVENS SENT: ROUND: 3 PICK: 22 RECEIVED: ROUND: 4 PICK: 6 ROUND: 4 PICK: 32 We'll have to shop for DE, WR and ILB among the UDFAs. Somehow, I don't think Rick Smith will face this dilemma. |
I would have taken Wentz too. There's only so many players who I would take over Paxton Lynch. Osweiler hasn't proven anything yet.
|
He's proven more than Wentz. But if the Texans drafted Wentz, I would make him #3 behind Weeden to start the year and let him know he's not ready and is getting trained for '17. Next year, we'll have a better feel for Osweiler and make it an open competition. In '18, we can trade either QB without a large cap hit and possibly for a big draft haul in return.
|
I understand the value of having the bird in hand and I believe that's the reason why we had to sign Oweiler. There's no way of knowing for sure that we could get one of these 'Potential Franchise QBs' in the draft. It's not my money, but it is awfully expensive to have a guy with very limited starts in the NFL. I'm having flashbacks of Matt Flynn. That being said, I hope that signing Brock doesn't preclude the team from drafting a QB if one falls in our laps.

Hindsight being 20/20 I should have taken Haeg @ #159 and then whoever was left @ #166 to play C since I already had Garnett on the roster. I was surprised that I was able to get Jarran Reed in the 2nd round. Reed and Sterling Shepard have 1st round grades on my draft board, so I was pleased to get them when I did while racking up extra picks. Garnett is my starting RG for the next 8 years. Correa provides insurance when Clowney gets injured and can rotate on passing downs. The prospect of Watt, Reed, and Hargrave is exciting to me. Promise is talented and has a ton of potential receiving out of the backfield. Prescott just needs to keep his nose clean and not be a distraction off the field. I doubt the Texans would draft him, but I've made it be known how I feel about this guy. Canady was a luxury I could afford with all the extra draft picks. At his size, he could potentially be a FS, and having a big CB is always a good thing to have in the tool box. Garrett and Mitchell are my favorite WRs that nobody is talking about and I want them on the roster. I grabbed Lasco for his speed and return ability. I realize that I have a lot of bodies from this draft, but that's less UDFAs I have to call. |

Arrowhead was the only board updated so I tried it. At #22, I could have selected Ragland (Kelly was gone) but the Patriots tempted me with two 2nds, a 3rd and a 6th. I took it but that was lower than I wanted to fall so I traded back up in the second and then traded down once more. I got some good players but I've liked some of my other drafts better.

Been out of town, but I'm back now. Another mock utilizing the CBS board. I traded out of the 1st round for two 2nd round picks. I was not sure that I would like the results, but I did. I wanted to give some props to Roy for making me take a look at a couple of the guys I took in this draft. Garnett has a mean streak and seems to fit the proto type guy that Mike Devlin likes to coach. I have not been targeting Garnett in some time, but Roy made a post recently that returned him to a target for me. Having Hunter sitting there at 61 was surprising to me and I jumped, he has the potential to be the best TE the Texans have had since Owen Daniels was in his prime. Next I took my 2nd rated OC, a hole that is begging to be filled. this gives me a OL of Brown, Allen, Martin, Garnett, Hopkins. Su'a-Filo either steps up and beats out one of the rookies or he backs up two positions (OC,OG) either way he moves on when his rookie deal expires. Next pick was another one of Roys guys Fanaika, I have to agree with Roy, he looks like a young JJ. I'm not saying he has the upside of JJ, but no one knew JJ had that upside, and Fanaika is only a late 3rd round pick. I was not sold on trading out of the 1st round, but I was impressed with the three 2nd rounders I got. All three have been discussed as possible 1st rounders this off season. And my two 3rd rounder I would not have been upset if I had drafted them in the 2nd. So five players in the top 100, I could get on board with that. |
Unless a few stud players fall, trading seems like our best option. There are maybe five or so players I would still choose at #22 but the gift of having additional 2nds and 3rds generally outweigh them. I'd be okay with a draft like this.
Who's your Dadi? :p |
I tried the Fanspeak board (4/5) and it was Trade-a-Palooza. The Bengals wanted me to trade down to #24, then the Seahawks wanted me to trade down to #26 then the Panthers wanted me to trade down to #30, picking up extra selections along the way which I then used to trade up with the Rams in Round 2 and trade up with the Saints in Round 3. Finally, I traded down one spot in the 3rd with Philadelphia to pocket an extra sixth. In the end, I got everything covered except a DE to replace Crick.

I was surprised to see Spriggs still sitting there at #74. He is going to take time to develop, but he could potentially become a starting LT in the NFL, so I felt there was value here with his athleticism. Bronson Kaufusi is slowly becoming one of my favorite players in this draft. He is older due to his Mission, but I like what I see and if he and Nassib are unavailable, I don't know who to get to fill in for Crick that I will be happy about. Javon Hargrave is a guy who I consistently draft. I selected 2 TEs and am pleased to do so when it's Vannett and Hooper. Von Bell is a guy I've seen projected as a 2nd rounder and I have a hard time buying that. However, if available at #108....I've decided to add him to My Guys. I got Malcolm Mitchell again. Feel really good about adding Kelly, Spriggs, and Glasgow to the OL group. Nick Vigil is going to be a good/solid NFL ILB and I'm preparing for the day when Cushing is no longer a Texan. Keyarris Garrett always shows up on my draft classes. Kevin Hogan came off the board @ #185 and with so many picks from trading down, I decided to get a game manager who lacks size, but makes up for it with intelligence and accuracy. Maybe I watched too many USC games, but I like this kid as a solid back-up who is much cheaper than Hoyer. I wanted a RB and Tre Madden was the guy with size/speed (6'0" 220lbs/7.09-Cone and 4.27-Shuttle) and still on the board (again, I watched some USC games). Tavon Young is only 5' 9 1/8" 183lbs, but I think he could play the slot. He has very good quickness (6.80-Cone and 3.93-Shuttle. |

When I got to pick #125 I contemplated taking Jordan Howard, but since I had Prosise ranked higher, I stuck to my board. All the good S prospects were gone except for TJ Green so I was forced to take him and hoped to get my WR, which I did with the next pick. At #166 I could have gone for another need position, but took Matt Ioannidis anyway because he was the BPA with a 3rd round grade in the 5th round. Lastly, I selected Dadi Nicolas to be a pass-rushing specialist. I highly recommend to anyone to utilize the DraftTek database. It was definitely challenging and close to what I believe will be an actual draft class grade. |

Using the Draftek board and only one trade down, I was able to draft a board I'd be thrilled to have although several of these I expect to be selected earlier than where I have them. Realistic? Jared Goff wasn't taken til the second round. That's how realistic this was. Still, we never know how these things unfold.

Kelly will anchor the center position for the next 10 years. Jones is a DT who is flexible enough to be a 3-4 DE. Hooper is the second-best TE according to most boards. Killebrew is a strong safety who hits like a LB. Prosise is not my ideal back but he only has to fit behind Miller and Blue. Norris a good ILB and Garrett a value addition as others here have pointed out. Only eight picks feels rather limiting after getting all these trade-down drafts but I like what this group brings to table. I have my doubts Kelly reaches #52 and I can see all the others being drafted higher than they are here but not outrageously so. |

This is pretty much my max and believe it or not, I did decline a few trade scenarios. I kind of cheated seeing the "BPA" list on the side of the screen so I knew that I could attempt to take a guy later that I have ranked highest. I.E. I drafted Sterling Shepard and Josh Garnett because they were getting close on the list and I was able to wait on my personal BPA at the time Kaufusi. I did the same when I selected Jerrell Adams over Malcolm Mitchell. If I had been smart, I might have attempted to trade back up for players like Maliek Collins (#79) and Nick Vannett (#94). Correa was my BPA at #122. I took Haeg to complete my O-Line of Kelly, Garnett, and Haeg. I love Promise as my 3rd down back and because I had so many picks I took a flyer on Jonathan Williams. I always seem to take Keyarris and Hogan was my backup QB selection. Having extra picks I selected a pass-rush specialist in Dadi Nicolas. I have a H-Back in Dan Vitale. Then just to have a QB on the practice squad I grabbed Kessler. |

I didn't get any good trade-down opportunities in the first and second but took one in the third that netted two fourths and a sixth. Conklin gives me flexibility with the OL. Shepard and Mitchell are nice additions to the WRs. Collins gives me push up the middle. Davis is a big hitter who can cover and I really was surprised to see him available in the 4th. Tapper is a project at OLB, but I like his measurables. Canady was was simply the BPA. Bummed I couldn't come away with at least one TE and I would need to trade down and get an extra pick to find one for the roster. |
4/12 CBS board:
A bit strange. With the big trade, I sense the OTs may drop a little bit which might allow Conklin or Decker to fall to us. The question will be whether now is the time to upgrade the OT position and prepare for Duane Brown to be next spring's big cap casualty. With some of the other options (Ragland, Elliott, Lynch, Reed), I'm becoming bigger on taking the good LTs while you can. I traded down in the second for a lower 2nd and a 3rd then traded the lower 2nd for a 3rd and a 5th. I missed out on some of the guys I wanted but still had a decent draft, not a dazzler. 22: R1P22 OT JACK CONKLIN MICHIGAN STATE 71: R3P8 WR STERLING SHEPARD OKLAHOMA 85: R3P22 TE AUSTIN HOOPER STANFORD 93: R3P30 C MAX TUERK SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 119: R4P21 RB PAUL PERKINS UCLA 149: R5P10 DT MATT IOANNIDIS TEMPLE 159: R5P20 S SEAN DAVIS MARYLAND 166: R5P27 ILB BLAKE MARTINEZ STANFORD 195: R6P20 DT ANTWAUN WOODS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TRADE PARTNER: CAROLINA PANTHERS SENT: ROUND: 2 PICK: 21 RECEIVED: ROUND: 2 PICK: 31 ROUND: 3 PICK: 30 TRADE PARTNER: NEW YORK GIANTS SENT: ROUND: 2 PICK: 31 RECEIVED: ROUND: 3 PICK: 8 ROUND: 5 PICK: 10 |

Roy, I could be happy with this except I don't see a need for two TEs in this draft. Select a decent RB at 4/25 like a Kenyan Drake or Paul Perkins who can be your third-down option. Then you can use that 6th rounder on a CB or S to add depth there.
|
I would have taken Tyvus Powell, except I figured Jerell Adams would be more impactful on the roster. The Patriots looked good with Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez on the field together. I also felt like I need at least one of them to pan out and I double my chances in case one of them is a bust.

I think CJ is salvageable so he can be paired with Hooper or Higbee or whomever. Hey, we do so many of these mocks that we don't explain some of our thinking. In general, I just take one player per position based on the severity of need and the scarcity of good options. Sometimes, what you want just isn't there and it changes the equation.
In general, my draft plan falls this way: 1) Best LT or DE/DT that could fit our scheme. 2) Ryan Kelly or Nick Martin for center. 3) One of a few top guards, particularly if the centers aren't there. 4) A TE that creates mismatches due to height or speed. 5) Increasing depth at RB and/or WR. 6) A strong safety that tackles well. 7) Better depth at ILB. 8) A second D-lineman. But the exact order is fluid based on which positions are disappearing. Sometimes I pick a player in the 3rd because he's the one good guy at that position then take a guy in the 4th I really think is a better player but there were alternative options if he fell off the board. All I know for sure is that the Texans will prioritize entirely differently than I would. |
