I dont think it would be a very good draft at all.

Well, I haven't updated my draftboard here, yet. However, I'll let you know that this is who I would be picking today on Friday the 13th. I've also included my "Athlete Index" just for kicks.

Now, it appears that there is a little bit of trouble with this draft. Kyle Moore is new to my board and he has the lowest index of any of my draft picks. However, he has more potential than Robert Ayers, who is now a 1st round pick. He's also insurance in case Antonio Smith doesn't pan out. I felt weird drafting him after getting Sidbury, but he does offer something a little different.

Scott McKillop was also just too good to pass up at this point in the draft. He's probably going to be better at the MIKE, but with DeMeco here, I'll give him a shot at SAM. That makes Matthews the WILL.

I was hoping to get Cedric Peerman as my other RB in the 4th round instead of Kyle Moore, but he was off the board. Luckily, I was still able to get Ian Johnson to help out in the backfield. Another thought for the 4th round was to draft David Bruton instead of Sidbury to go along with Chip Vaughn in the Secondary. Then I'd only have 1 DE (Moore) in the draft to go along with a SS and a FS.

Lastly, Roy Miller might motivate Frank Okam to go to law school or start performing on the football field.

Yours is heavy defense, as well. I know there is duplication of positions in my draft and yours. I think in an actual draft, if you went that many picks defense or offense and got 2 above average players right away, another that turned into above average in a few years and a couple of guys that could provide decent depth and play some special teams, that would be a successful draft.

I have to say that I am very intrigued by Vontae Davis. The only reason I have Clay Matthews slotted ahead of him is because I am of the belief that I can find another player to put at FS later in the draft. The Texans appear to like both the SS and the FS to be very similar in their ability to stop the run to disguise who may be in the box. However, the thought of Vaughn and Davis makes me a happy guy.

The history of Vernon Davis and Jason Allen also gives me pause. Vernon, like his brother, put on a hellacious showing at the Combine. However, he has not put up the production that I would have expected. That may have something to do with the team and coaches he's been playing with, but I must put some of the responsibility on him. Jason Allen was another CB who was selected highly (16th) and expected to play FS without much results.

For those who do not remember Allen's numbers:

4.39 - 40, 1.5 - 10, 17 - Reps, 39.5" - Vert, 10'11" - Jump, 3.83 - Shuttle, 6.77 - Cone

Davis put up:
4.40 - 40, 1.47 - 10, 25 - Reps, 36" - Vert, 10' 5" - Jump, 4.07 - Shuttle, 6.75 - Cone

Now, it's not really fair to compare Vontae to his brother or even another athletic DB. However, it's in the back of my mind and pulling me towards Matthews.

Clay is not a bad athlete, to say the least;

4.62 - 40, 35.5" - Vert, 10'1" - Jump, 6.9 - Cone

But last year, Cliff Avril was the 3rd round pick (92) after his Combine:

4.59 - 40, 32.5" - Vert, 9'9" - Jump, 6.9 - Cone

So, I'm not quite sure if Clay is 77 picks better. However, this is a different draft. Clay is probably better in space and may be able to play the WILL, where Avril was simply a SAM/DE hybrid. Also, there aren't many LBs in THIS draft who come close to offering what Mathews does in terms of size, speed, and pass-rushing ability. Conversely, I can get a player like David Bruton or Chris Clemons on the 2nd day of the draft who may be able to match Vontae Davis's athleticism. Obviously, they aren't considered to be in the same level by the "experts" because of what they did and didn't do on the field in college. Nor are they possible lockdown CBs, which is considered the more valuable position by many.

As many of you know, I'm aware that football is more than just numbers at the Combine. However, I think that they must be considered in order to keep evaluators objective.

Just to finish this thought. The Texans were supposedly interested in Mike Montgomery of the Packers, so Kyle Moore isn't a crazy idea.

I also thought I'd compare Moore, Ayers, and Kruger.

Just out of curiousity, no overtones intended, how has the board done in past drafts.

Just a small commercial for Ian Johnson, he was a top 5 RB in the forty at the combine. He has been nothing short of a TD machine in his college career. He also is a team player.

If you can get a RB who broke Marshall Faulk college TD record in the 6th round, you have to take a shot on him IMO.

It's met or exceeded the S&P 500 over the last 5 year average. :D

To tell you the truth, I can't recall every pick. The HPF.com site is no longer and that is where I had all of my boards. Just going with the 1st round picks, I would have gone with these....

I think the question is more about Roy's board, but on the old site, at least for the first 4 or 5 drafts, I kept a pretty short board of picks up through the Texans first round selection which I still have archived.

2002 - LT Bryant McKinnie (Carr was pre-determined by January... I had Peppers and McKinnie at the top, slight edge to McKinnie since JP didn't seem like a good fit for the 3-4)
2003 - WR Charles Rogers (WR Angry Dre was next)
2004 - DE Will Smith (Dunta was next)
2005 - LB Derrick Johnson (before the trade-down at least ...Travis Johnson was my highest rated DT/34DE for awhile before the draft)
2006 - DE Mario Williams (I was down on Reggie but expected Texans to take him.)
2007 - didn't officially commit a list, or can't recall one. It probably would have come down to LB Patrick Willis and CBs Leon Hall and Darrelle Revis. My mock nearly won the overall ESPN.com contest though... would have won a Hummer if I predicted the Okoye pick!!! Ugh.
2008 - didn't officially commit a list (was building ItB!). Once the majority of the LTs were gone though, I had my eye on RB Rashard Mendenhall

There were obviously players I liked more that were taken before the Texans were on the clock, and there was a draft or two in which I might have considered a trade up.

In addition to that, he is a very hard worker, great in the locker room and will play special teams. You might say he's a tough player, too. He finished one game with a bruised kidney and another with a partially collapsed lung.

Now I am not saying go for him in the 1st, but he seems to be deep on most "guru's " RB list. That has the potential to make a guy with his attributes a steal.

Funny looking back at it though. 2006, I like Hawk but there is no way I would advocate using the first round on a linebacker, but I was pissed that we didn't take Reggie Bush. I would still eventually like to see what he could do in a Denver style offense.

About 30% less than Steve Slaton.

I checked out that cite and I liked it. Two quotes I especially liked:

"The best way to stop today’s pass-friendly NFL offenses is to put the quarterback on his back."

"... the name of the game for the defense is rushing the quarterback. The offense typically wins if the quarterback has time to throw and protecting the blindside is crucial."

One thing I disagree with him about, though, is his listing of Bomar as a value pick. It appears to me that he hasn't actually seen Bomar play any games. Bomar looks great on paper or even in practuce, but put eleven defensive players in front of him and he quickly melts down. If he ever becomes a solid NFL starter I will be greatly surprised.
